Post: Gun control & the right to bear arms.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Living in England I've grown up in a country where you quite simply by and large aren't allowed guns, so gun crime itself is as far as I'm aware a comparative rarity to say in America. At the very least that's the impression I get. And I like that, because I feel like far too often with everybody owning a gun somebody would do something stupid in the midst of an argument or at the lowest of lows in depression.

On the other hand, I have an enormous distrust for 'big government' and looking at various things I think owning a gun would be a nice security to perhaps allay those fears.

I shan't go beyond that in the OP. Reply away(but preferably don't threaten me with your legally owned pistol).

Living in Canada where guns are also illegal, I can understand why people would think that it's safer to just not have weapons at all.

However, I think most people know how I dislike large government and how I believe in freedom, and how I believe that the government should not be telling people what to do at all times.Personally I have no problem with gun laws, and I do think that it should be everyone's right to own a firearm. At the same time, I do think that weapons such as assault rifles and other larger weapons are slightly unnecessary for personal use.

Although I can sympathize with the opinion of making guns illegal, I disagree with it. Although I am not a gun-totter myself, being an American guarantees our right to bear arms. There are millions of responsible gun owners in this nation who have never caused any problems. I believe we need to bear arms when our nation becomes a police state (some may say it already has.) That being said I believe that there may need to be more restrictions put in place. Just my opinion.

I feel that guns can be related to the crime rate in an area. But, I feel in this situation it is important to note whether or not the gun is owned legally. For example some gang-banger or punk got it off the streets.

I can not find any statistics at the moment for legal ownership and crime vs illegal ownership and crime.

I do believe that we should be able to own guns within certain restrictions for certain reasons. People obviously go through depression and it's a dark place. I feel that if someone owns a gun they should be subject to a number of psychiatric evaluations per a year (at taxpayers expense, since this is who it's protecting). Not essentially to take a persons gun away but, to help that person get better. If you look at most gun related crimes of legal owners they are mass shootings (or so I believe? ). With these mass shooting normally there is a mental sickness.

I personally am getting a G19 in a couple of months and plan on getting my CPL (Concealed Pistol License) just because I live in between Flint and Detroit (more so towards Flint) and because I work 3rd shift and am out about at later hours.

I'm not too sure about this, but I'm leaning towards keeping them illegal.
What I can say is that even though a lot of people would probably get a gun just for safety in emergencies, there will always be a number of people that will abuse their freedom, and use it in the wrong way. For this reason, I think it's safer to just leave it how it currently is in America (and apparently England as well).

Than again, one can argue that the number of people protecting themselves is greater and more important than the number of people that would abuse it. To be quite honest I have no clue where the numbers would stand.

I think guns in the UK is pointless, we've gone this long without such a law being enforced, why not go longer? If our government were able to trust us with such a lethal force they'd most likely do it, they'd get nothing but a steady income from the tax of guns. However, the levels of maturity shown among us Brits is at an all time low, they've banned air rifles, swords and knives, etc, what hope do we have of ever getting gun laws? The only people with guns are hunters.

If a gun law came into Britain I reckon for the ownership of a gun you'd need to pass a series of tests, whether they be psychiatric or what-not, the system would have to be much tighter than the system they use in the United States and any other country this law exists in. Not that we're all delinquents and reprobates, but, that you don't hear of only fist fights anymore, it's all gun and knife crime.

As for the safety factor, especially when being burgled, I think it's highly essential, most areas of the UK now are becoming vastly dangerous. You don't know what kind of weapon that burglar has, as dangerous as you may well be with a bat or a knife or even just bare hands, he/she may well have something much quicker than you.

In my opinion, it's a tough call.

A responsible gun owner is never a concern, it is those small individuals who are the cause of the problem. A weapon is dangerous no matter who uses it, a gun though makes it far to easy for anyone who can hold it. While I do not believe banning guns all together will fix the problem, I do think a psychological exam should be done.

Honestly Americans have too many weapons, IMHO.

In America we have the constitutional right to bear arms. And even if they try to rid out guns in America there will always be people manufacturing, distributing, and challenging the governments willingness and dedication to make the US a firearm free country. I can tell you now that if this ever does happen, there will be thousands maybe even millions who will fight it and win.

I'm torn.

On the one hand, it's the ultimate form of personal protection. On the other hand, it seems as if it rarely if ever does anything other than harm. Good in theory but bad in practice?

It's be interesting to see the gun and knife crime statistics in developed countries before any of us put forward an opinion.
