I couldn't find this anywhere and I figured some people might still like playing those old gems, so this is a tutorial on how to play pretty much any Playstation 1 game on nearly any android device over 2.1.0. I have tested this on a Samsung Galaxy Y and a LG Optimus L300, both of which are the lowest end android device I could find in my country. So I think this will work on pretty much anything. My phone isn't great and even the larger games run smooth!
First you will need to download a few things, however you do NOT need to be rooted!(If you don't know what 'rooting' your android means you should google it along with your model number)
The Emulator
I have used various emulators and FPSe is by far the best. PSX4Droid wouldn't load any ROMs on my phone, yet the same ROM on FPS would work fine. I havn't tested the others but I recommend using FPSe until you find another one you like. They are easy to find, just google PSX emulator. Below is a link to FPSe v0.10.57.
Download the emulator and extract the contents. Connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable (in setting/notifcations click USB Debugging Mode) or a SD card slot. Open your SD card on your computer and make a folder called PSX in no other folders. After extracting the emulator it should be an APK (app) so put this in the folder you just made.
The BIOS
The BIOS or basic input output system is one of the key components to make this work, and also why most people can't get it to work. The link can be found below for the main BIOS you will be using.
File name is SCPH1001.zip, download the BIOS and extract the contents. Make a folder inside SD Card > PSX > BIOS and place the unzipped file in here. We will be needing this after running the app. If you wish to play and other kind of ROM etc NTSC you will need to download the appropriate BIOS.
unecm.exe
unecm.exe is a program that was made to essentially unlock the ROM's and ISO's, because you can't simply download the game and play it. Devs know thats to easy, but thanks to unecm we can play our favourite games on the go!
After you have downloaded the program extract the contents and bring them to desktop. The only one you will be using is unecm.exe (However the others, will do the opposite e.g. you put a unecm ROM onto a ecm.exe it will convert back to ecm)
Now that you have unecm.exe ready, the last step is getting your game...
ROM's and ISO's
Please note, legally, you can only use these if you own the game in real-life. I take no responsibility for what you download.
A ROM or an ISO is the image of the cartridge or disc's data, frozen and ready to play much like UMD's for the early PSP. Below is a link to where I download most of my ISO's, scroll through the long list of classic games and start downloading your favourites!!
There will be different versions for most games, download either enter game name[E] or enter game name.
This is what the BIOS from earlier was reading, europe or united states, if you can only find NTSC copies of the game visit the BIOS section and find NTSC1001.zip
After you've got a ROM or ISO for the game you want, extract it and bring just the file to desktop. Drag and drop the file onto unecm.exe and a black popup window will appear saying decoding with a %.
After its finished decoding find the new file that was made, and it should say game+maybe some numbers.binhowever all thats important is that its now .bin and not .unecm
Go into Computer > SD Card > PSX > and create a folder called ROMS. Paste the .bin gamefile into this folder.
Disconnect your phone and your just about done!
====================================================================================
Put your SD card back into your phone and find the FPSe app in the PSX folder, click install. Run the app when its finished installing and hit Menu, System. At the top option will say something like find BIOS so click this, and make your way to PSX > BIOS > SCPH1001.bin
Its as easy as that, now back up and when it says select ROM find PSX > ROM > The game you just unecm'ed!! Hope you enjoy playing these great games again, below I'll post a few of my favorite games that run perfect on my phone.
As all the others runs fine, no lag except the sound flickers when shooting repeatedly.
Really the list is endless, theres only one game that hasn't worked out of the 50+ I tried.
Unfortunately it was Metal Gear Solid I'm afraid is the only series so far to not boot properly.
I do not condone piracy, and have only provided the links above for future personal use to download the ROM's and ISO's that I own in real-life.
I have no responsibility for penalties from this post :nerd:
That was one of the main things that put me off buying a iOS phone/tablet vs. just downloading the emulator and a working ROM. Having to spend $1000 to take it home, and risk bricking it and losing warranty just to have it JB. Rooting on android however is extremely easy, and now that we can unroot androids over 1.5.0 nearly any phone can be taken back to get your refund if something happens.
