I'm from Ireland, Dublin is good but if you want a real treat go to Galway, Kerry, Cork...

Budapest, Hungary -just an overall beautiful city
Bojnice, Slovakia -has a pretty decent sized zoo and also is home to a pretty awesome medieval castle
Salzburg, Austria -a small, but beautiful city. lot's to see and do.. And if you're a fan of classical music and/or the sound of msic you may enjoy you're visit even more
Budapest, Turkey -Another beautiful (and colourful) city. Should definitely check out the grand bazaar and the hagia sophia (my favorites) as well as topkapi palace
Hope you and your family have an awesome trip ^_^

I live in Dublin so I give you a rough view of it if you were to travel here. So really the first thing is to be prepared that you will probably have shit weather when you are here as we get 2 weeks of summer at most every year.. (if you want last minute I'll let you know when it gets good lol). Otherwise for things to do family wise, the zoo is quite good. Its based in a large park which has the presidents house, Garda (police) hq etc near it as well. A lot of wild animals in the park like reindeer so your kids might like that to spend a day there (on rare good weather).
Not far from Dublin in County Wicklow is a place called Powerscourt. I normally go here every summer. Its a 13th century Castle estate owned by some Viscount. I'm not sure if the house is open to the public but the gardens are etc and nearby in a valley is a waterfall that a lot of people have BBQ's around etc in good weather. There's quite a few parks for kids etc here near the base of the waterfall.
Malahide Castle if you like that kind of thing is good. The castle has a large grounds open to the public at no cost and has a big park for kids. I think there's a farm too. The castle is quite interesting to see.
As you can see where I'm going there isn't much you wouldn't find anywhere else unless you're looking to see heritage etc, but I'll go on.
Outside Dublin though you can find quite a few things to do if you're willing to travel by rail/bus or rent a car. The Burren is a big attraction among foreigners I'm told. Its in Clare so thats a train ride away. There is a large network of caves there called the Aillwee Caves along with a lot of history in the Burren like tombs of stone etc.
Cliffs of Moher are in the west of Ireland too. Big massive cliffs down into the sea that are almost vertical from hundreds of feet up.
Honestly there isn't much family wise here. Irelands main tourist attraction is the bars, pubs, clubs, drinking festivals like Arthurs Day. Any questions though about anything in Ireland I'll be glad to help :p
