Post: The End Of The Nintendo DS?

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The Nintendo DS is the second most popular gaming system in the history of the video game world, only losing out by 2 million sales to the PlayStation 2. With the record of the most popular console in touching distance, does Nintendo really plan on ending its production?

The simple answer...yes. Come 31st March 2014, the DS will no longer be available in retail shops as new and Nintendo will stop production of the handheld. Despite this, Nintendo has projected a further 10 million sales for the DS before they stop making them, meaning it would take over the PlayStation 2 and put its name in the gaming hall of fame.

The DS was released at the tail end of 2004, meaning it will reach the grand old age of 9 at the end of this year. The consoles successor, has made a firm mark in terms of sales now, reaching a total of 31 million unit sales since its release in 2011.

Will the DS reach the projected 10 million sales or will it forever remain behind the PS2? Let me know your thoughts.

They need more sales for the 3DS, so its logical for the DS's production is die out.

TBH i think that nintendo just does not grab peoples attention any more especially with all the new game consoles out there recently the ps vita the ps4 coming up ect. The nintendo doesnt have the graphics , doesnt have the games and i dont blame people for being down on them. I bought one years ago and got sick of it withing a couple months and bought a ps3 instead and going from a nintendo to a ps3 WOW the diffence lol. So im not too bummed out if the nintendo never returns :p

the only thing that im bummed about is that i heard they are making a new super smash bro brawl 2!!! i would be interested in that ONLY BECAUSE i played smash bros for the gamecube. other than that i really wouldn't care either. i just afraid that for the people who are still clinging on the wii. For example, my girlfriend HATES "complicated" systems such as the ps3 and 360. she says its to many buttons and functions and you need to react fast. So she results to games on the wii close to platform games. As times flys, simplistic games are done for. :dumb:

nintendo was meant for the 20th century ... you know, when we were all little kiddies. nintendo was a big thing back then, snes, ds, gamecube etc. have to admit it was a good childhood. now as technology moves on, nintendo is slowly dying out. i mean lmao, who here got a wii u?

This is so dissapointing:( I grew up playing with my Nintendo ds and always thought it was a great hand held system. It wasn't for more serious gamers like the PSP was; thats why I liked it. What a shame:/

RIP PICHU.
I bought a 3DS XL for myself in December. I doubt they will end the entire production in 2014 as the 3DS XL just came out more than a year ago.

What I see being no longer produced is the Nintendo DSi which is still sold in stores. I see the 3DS/XL being sold in stores for another 3-5 years; especially since companies are now starting to really take advantage of the 3D software.

What I see happening in the near future is a new handheld device that has better hardware and performs better. I see in the near future something that would try and match the graphic quality of a PS Vita while maintaining its trademark touch screen.

I do see an increase in camera quality, I see them moving up to 1mp-3mp.

I think they know people will continue to buy their systems because they are for young children/families and many parents still do not like the XBox/PS3 because it is expensive and the social factor that plays along with it is greater than the Wii/Wii U.

In the end, I feel a new gaming system will be released, (Console) and a new handheld that will likely have greatly improved graphics. Part of the reason why the DS systems do not have that great of graphics is because they lack the ability to handle true texturing.

you have a great point. as long as there are kids being produced im sure parents will buy there child a DS to start them off since it is simple after all. not only that but i was talking to a co-worker yesterday and he was saying that alot of the games that used tobe for sega genesis are being re-made to have 3d capability and also be cross compatible with the wii U. They are making Streets of rage over and as you know everybody loved that game and all the older people are going to buy it. So i guess they have potential. I here the new 3D xl (whatever its called) is bigger and dosent strain or hurts peoples eyes any more. AND THEY ARE MAKING A NEW CROSS COMPATIBLE SUPER SMASH BROS (MADE BY A DIFFERENT TEAM THIS TIME)
