Interop security conference in Las Vegas is a conference which does not hit the news that often. However a keynote from Michael Barrett, chief information security officer at PayPal has put it into the news.
Micheal was talking about how he wants a better way to log into your accounts. In his talk he started to release details on what paypal has been working on. Paypal is not alone in it goals Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Alliance also has the same goals which is to destory passwords!
"Our intention is to really obliterate, within a certain number of years, both passwords and PINs and see the whole internet — including internally in enterprises — obliterate user IDs and passwords and PINs from the face of the planet."
The plan by using a device to check it you, a USB key or sensors or something that needs user interaction. Google have already done a user interaction based protection system for it google accounts.
We already have USB key services like Yubi key. Biometrics is likely to become important in protecting user accounts within a couple of years. Maybe one day the password is going to die out but may be a long time away yet. Would be lovely not having to remember all the passwords in the world for a couple dozen sites.
