(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Given my (in)sane car obsession, a term I often come across, and that is more than often misused, is “RICE.” Most people generalize that term unfairly and match it up with Japanese cars instantly. For starters, the Internet has agreed on the acronym of R.I.C.E to play out as Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements. Nowhere in that explanation does the meaning hint at the cars having to be Japanese to be rice.

Looking back in the early 2000’s, when Fast and the Furious first hit the big screens, this type of “RICE” modifications may have been acceptable; although, borderline hideous. I admit, I thought having a sick bodykit and a massive wing on your car was cool, but I soon realized it wasn’t. Pointless visual modifications throw your car into the category of RICE. Not to slay ethnicities, but a lot of Mexicans are the ones who still continue to contribute to the inglorious world of RICE modifications. Take a Honda Civic for example. I’ve seen a countless number of them with chrome wheels that barely squeeze inside the wheel well. In addition to an unnecessarily huge wing on a car barely pushing out 125 horsepower, they throw on hugely hideous bodykits, hood vents, roof scoops, and trashy chrome lights. Now, THAT is RICE. All of the modifications are cosmetic and race inspired; yet, they serve to purpose given performance.

I’m not bashing modifying a car, but there is a proper way to go about it if you’re serious about improving the way it drives. Start with suspension, tires, and brakes. Things that seem irrelevant play the biggest factors. Unless you’re SexySolo, you aren’t driving a Ferrari. And most of us on here don’t. I love to modify cars. The way I see it, a car from the factory is limited and tamed. Through hours of hard work, part swapping and eagerly waiting at your doorstep for the UPS guy to arrive, you end up with a car that is much more than what you originally had. And all of that can be done without a huge spoiler and wide bodykit. I don’t see why one would modify an Exotic car, but not all of us can get at them. Since that’s my case, I find it enjoyable to buy a cheaper, older car and put a little more money into it to unleash its fury.

A real car enthusiast loves and appreciates all cars. Or, they have legitimate reasons for not liking a car. They don’t use the term RICE when it doesn’t fit. To put it short, RICER’s aren’t only Japanese cars, but ALL cars. I’ve seen BMW’s and even the precious American Muscle that is Mustang riced. Don’t believe me? Check these pics out.

Now, there's many more that fit both of the categories, but I just picked a few. As you can see, JDM, USDM, EDM, and all other places that manufacture cars can fall into both playing fields. So, next time, please be mindful when you use the term RICE.

BUT.. at the end of the day, it's your car. Do what you will, and don't give a fuck about what others say if it makes you happy.

What's the point in putting all the money under the hood, when the speed limit across the world ranges form only 60 to what 80 mph? Sure it's nice to have but I don't see the point unless your a track guy(or a criminal who shouldn't even have a license in the first place) ... Which most of us aren't. =]

I agree with this 100% man. Not be against Mexicans, but, over around where I live (Oregon) There is alot of Mexican RICE... I throw up in my mouth every time I see one :/ For me I believe in preformance tuning then, having a nice set of rims... Not RICE rims, but some Volk Racing rims, or some BBS Rims Smile The most rice I go, is that I like serious stancing. Like some of the cars on Stance|Works I like. I just like that agressive look with more rear camber than front camber. If it isnt RICE I like Slammed or Bagged cars.

Just my 10 Cents Winky Winky

haha it sounds dick, but it's true. And I don't mean all Mexicans.. just the one's that speak a little bit of English and all. Where I live (So.Cal) there's a lot of those. And I see so many cars with huge wings and huge rims and all, it just doesn't look tasteful. I work at a gas station, where we sell alcohol and beer so I have to ID people. When I see the said Mexicans come in said cars, they almost always have Mexico ID's.. so yea.. and they speak Spanish only and look at me like I'm the one that's being an asshole for not understanding.. But yea, I digress.

u got some stance ur not flush

And oh goodness, don't get me started on the new Fusion.. they totally jacked the Aston Martin front grille.. haha but yea, I've never really driven the car so I can't talk about how it drives. But again, I stay away from those types of cars. All ties back to preference. Oh, and since I work at a gas station in a pretty rich area.. I see many exotic cars. Porches, Lambo's and Ferrari's and things of that nature.. awesome though, nonetheless.

What you considering getting later?

And the way I see modifications.. if a car can be made better than the factory version, then why not? I enjoy the hell out it haha

It's like a standard and deluxe car wash, might as well pay a little more and get a better outcome, in this case car. Haha, it does have a strong resemblance to an Aston Martin, maybe it's an economic version, it is a hybrid haha. Damn, that sounds like a pretty sweet view of cars.

I always wanted a Dodge Charger, but they seem so pricey used, I could get a Dodge Dart for a fraction; and the top model too.

I think a nice stereo system is a nice addition.

Well, its something that means different things to different people Winky Winky

But if its tword cars it usually means a trashy tuned car. Like the massive body kits and having your car and rims in NEON pink xD

Anything (Japanese) from F&TF is RICE STATUS... Except Skylines... They are NEVER RICE :P

It just feels good to know you have all that power on tap, ya know? I don't condone street racing for many reasons, but having a fast car even for daily driving is pretty cool. It feels good to know you can just downshift and blast off.. haha. But yea, track days are where it's at. It doesn't mean you have to be at the track all the time, but maybe once a month you spend some money and have a good time. It's fun on the track because then you're really pushing your car to its limits while not endangering others.

I want Volk TE37's baaaaaaaaaaaaaad. But, there's so much more I can buy for that $3-4K haha. Maybe one day when I'm making a confortable living I'll get a pair. Oh, and BBS's too.. Until then, I will have to rock the XXR replicas..

I like stance to an extent.. stretched tires and insane camber when sometimes tires look fucking 90 degrees is just stupid to me. But hey, some people like it. A nicely lowered ride with a good stance and a decent amount of - camber is pretty.

Charger's are cool, but to me they're huge. I'd go with a Challenger Smile And yea, the Dart seems good from what I've seen. Plus there's a lot of customization options for it. I need to test drive one, they look fun. I can't help but see it as the new SRT4.

I don't think they do it intentionally. Some people think it's "cool" and if they like it, then sure go for it. But people who know cars know the fine line between rice and nice.. and when people call something nice rice, I don't get so nice.. lol
