(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Given my (in)sane car obsession, a term I often come across, and that is more than often misused, is “RICE.” Most people generalize that term unfairly and match it up with Japanese cars instantly. For starters, the Internet has agreed on the acronym of R.I.C.E to play out as Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements. Nowhere in that explanation does the meaning hint at the cars having to be Japanese to be rice.

Looking back in the early 2000’s, when Fast and the Furious first hit the big screens, this type of “RICE” modifications may have been acceptable; although, borderline hideous. I admit, I thought having a sick bodykit and a massive wing on your car was cool, but I soon realized it wasn’t. Pointless visual modifications throw your car into the category of RICE. Not to slay ethnicities, but a lot of Mexicans are the ones who still continue to contribute to the inglorious world of RICE modifications. Take a Honda Civic for example. I’ve seen a countless number of them with chrome wheels that barely squeeze inside the wheel well. In addition to an unnecessarily huge wing on a car barely pushing out 125 horsepower, they throw on hugely hideous bodykits, hood vents, roof scoops, and trashy chrome lights. Now, THAT is RICE. All of the modifications are cosmetic and race inspired; yet, they serve to purpose given performance.

I’m not bashing modifying a car, but there is a proper way to go about it if you’re serious about improving the way it drives. Start with suspension, tires, and brakes. Things that seem irrelevant play the biggest factors. Unless you’re SexySolo, you aren’t driving a Ferrari. And most of us on here don’t. I love to modify cars. The way I see it, a car from the factory is limited and tamed. Through hours of hard work, part swapping and eagerly waiting at your doorstep for the UPS guy to arrive, you end up with a car that is much more than what you originally had. And all of that can be done without a huge spoiler and wide bodykit. I don’t see why one would modify an Exotic car, but not all of us can get at them. Since that’s my case, I find it enjoyable to buy a cheaper, older car and put a little more money into it to unleash its fury.

A real car enthusiast loves and appreciates all cars. Or, they have legitimate reasons for not liking a car. They don’t use the term RICE when it doesn’t fit. To put it short, RICER’s aren’t only Japanese cars, but ALL cars. I’ve seen BMW’s and even the precious American Muscle that is Mustang riced. Don’t believe me? Check these pics out.

RICE..

Now, there's many more that fit both of the categories, but I just picked a few. As you can see, JDM, USDM, EDM, and all other places that manufacture cars can fall into both playing fields. So, next time, please be mindful when you use the term RICE.

BUT.. at the end of the day, it's your car. Do what you will, and don't give a fuck about what others say if it makes you happy.

lol'd haha.
It's funny seeing those bootleg Daytons that stick out of the body with wheel and all.

As for car modifications, I don't have a nice car that I feel like putting into for visual or performance enhancements. But whenever I do get one, I like them with a nice body, not to go overboard and get a huge spoiler and an overly exaggeratedly large kit either, I mean the kits that usually come with the more expensive model of the car. I think that the new Ford Fusion looks pretty damn good, I bet it performs just as well too.

I can see why people mod their cars (looks, to impress, show-off, etc.) and I suppose it can be justified, I just don't like to see the mods that make the car look stupid, if it looks nice cool (such as the old school lowriders, the only car Hispanic actually fixed up nicely) then it's fair game to me.

When I hear stanced, I imagine insane negative camber. I have about -3.5/-3.6 in the rear, and it leans a tad bit. Wheels aren't tucked either. So, I don't think I'm stanced haha Just lowered on some coils to feel more confident on them right turns! haha

haha it sounds dick, but it's true. And I don't mean all Mexicans.. just the one's that speak a little bit of English and all. Where I live (So.Cal) there's a lot of those. And I see so many cars with huge wings and huge rims and all, it just doesn't look tasteful. I work at a gas station, where we sell alcohol and beer so I have to ID people. When I see the said Mexicans come in said cars, they almost always have Mexico ID's.. so yea.. and they speak Spanish only and look at me like I'm the one that's being an asshole for not understanding.. But yea, I digress.

Oh jeez, I'm sorry if your precious time can't be wasted reading a thread. But no one's forcing you to read. You just commented, and pretty ignorantly at that.. but yes. I'm assuming you're still pretty young, so I can understand the stubbornness.

I gotta agree with you on that, you do see some busted ass cars around here in So-Cal, is it me, or is there a larger growing amount of RX-8's? Ever since my friend got his, they seem to be more common now, poor guy, his was the only one for a while haha.

Yeah, they do seem to always be irritated with those who can't speak Spanish.

What part of So.Cal.. I'm in OC and yea, an RX-8 is a common car. But then again, there's some sort of psychological thing going on with what you said about seeing more of them after getting one. I got my windows tinted and then I started noticing all the cars that were also tinted.. so I don't know, maybe you just become more aware of something. But anyways, I see RX-8's often. An FD3S on the other hand.. never seen one on the street. Seen a couple at car meets, but never in the "wild" I suppose.

I live in San Bernardino, one of the more ghetto areas of So-Cal ha. Around here, it wasn't as common, but like you said, you probably never notice it. I saw a Lambo in the "wild", it was wizzing by on the freeway, it was awesome haha. Since all I'm driving right now is a busted ass Frontier, I'm not all too concerned about cars, or it looking nice. But I do have a couple of cars I'm considering of getting later down the line.

I know what you mean. Base model cars I can't stand. Because, for a few more $$, you can get the same car with a lot more options. And more often than not, they look better than the base models too. And oh goodness, don't get me started on the new Fusion.. they totally jacked the Aston Martin front grille.. haha but yea, I've never really driven the car so I can't talk about how it drives. But again, I stay away from those types of cars. All ties back to preference. Oh, and since I work at a gas station in a pretty rich area.. I see many exotic cars. Porches, Lambo's and Ferrari's and things of that nature.. awesome though, nonetheless.

What you considering getting later?

And the way I see modifications.. if a car can be made better than the factory version, then why not? I enjoy the hell out it haha
