John Carmack lead programmer of ID software has taken up the role of chief technology officer at Oculus VR. In a move which shocked most of the gaming press apart from a couple industry veterans. John has been positive about the project for some time being one of the first industry to acquire a test device. He spoke publicly about how he believes virtual reality is the next big step forward. Before getting his hands on a test device he was critical about pass efforts , his mood however changed once getting his hand on a couple test units from Oculus.
He confirmed over on his main twitter that he still has a role at ID software but did not say what. John carmack was one of the co founders at the company, he also worked on a number of technical projects which advanced video imaging for video games.
Some of his work has had a major impact on video games helping to create the 2D games along with 3D techniques. Some techniques he helped worked with over his 22 year career adaptive tile refresh, raycasting , binary space partitioning , surface caching , Carmack's Reverse and megatexture technology. Most likely more techniques he helped create but is not credited with. He also worked on the highly successful Quake engine , which is still used by a range of games in code terms Call of duty base is rooted in the Quake engine 3.
He also worked on Doom , Quake along with a range of other games dating back to 22 years or more.
Was a driving force when it comes to technical design choices and game design but during recent years has focused more on the technical side of things. In a couple recent interviews he stated or hinted he wanted to return to the technical side of things. He also hinted that he feels his game design skills tapped out 10 years ago in recent interviews. The most recent was a 3 hour long QuakeCon keynote speech on a range of topics from new consoles to head mounted displays. At QuakeCon he talked about Google glass how he feels it a great new platform with strong value, side effects are over stated along with excited to see what the next generation of designers can do.
CEO of Oculus VR he also stated that without John's support the project would have stalled some time ago a demo was showed off running Doom 3 on the headset back in 2012 E3. However the plan to release the game along with the device after a kickstart stalled due to technical issues.
