Liberal education requirements. They want you to be more diversely educated than just "undeclared business."

Although important to be well rounded, I never understood this either. However, I do believe that everyone needs a basic understanding of Math and Science, but University or College is not the place for that. We had high school for that. I choose my education in University and pay for it, unless it is a prerequisite don't fill up my day with useless classes.

You can tell your kids random facts on the subject.

"I could careless about space"

Well seeing as you could care less, then at least a little part of you enjoys astronomy. On the other hand, if you couldn't care less about astronomy then I'd understand why you wouldn't want to be in that class.

Using maths in a practical use like business.
Understanding patterns and models which could be helpful in a business area.

From a quick google, it's a foundation course which allows you to pick a specific area of interest. Bunch of sciences mixed with business units.
Little bit strange they did not let you pick which science.

Does have a use your be shocked how useful it could be.

I don't know where you go to school, but typically you are just required to take a course that satisfies a general requirement. Meaning that there would be other alternatives to Astronomy.
