I would suggest if you want to go to school, join and they will pay for you right?

Just go to college, and if Russia isn't careful with the Ukraine's policies then you may be forced to join the military.

Awesome man, nothing wrong with wanting to be a Marine. But you have to ask yourself some very important questions before you sign the contract. Because at the end of the day it's a commitment.

First and foremost, is this something you really want to do? Have you always wanted to be a Marine? If you answered yes to both of those then by all means go and talk to your local recruiter. If you didn't then think about it for awhile.

Assuming you answered yes have you talked to your parents? Ultimately the decision is for you to make if you're 18. But it's important to see how they feel about your decision and it's also important that they understand that the Marine Corps is a fighting force. If they are hesitant about your decision assure them that this is something you're serious about. Your recruiter will also talk to your parents about the Marine Corps and the Marine Corps way of life etc.

When you do go and talk to the recruiter you'll eventually be asked about a particular MOS that you maybe interested in. Be sure to tell them you want xxxx on your contract. For example 03xx (infantry) contracts are hard to come by especially now with all the military budget cuts. But if you don't tell the recruiter what you want to do in the Corps you'll end up with an open contract... Basically you could get any MOS that the Corps needs filled.

Lastly, being in the Corps is going to suck. It doesn't matter if you end up a pog or a grunt, it's going to suck equally. There will be bullshit you don't agree with and things you might find dumb. But remember you're in the military not working at McDonalds. And when you're a boot you'll be hazed and the people who are mentally weak are the ones who try and do stupid shit to get discharged because they can't handle it. When you do something like that it sticks with you for life on your DD-214.

I hope I helped. Like I said think hard and long about it. If you wanted to be a Marine you would have talked to your recruiter already. Also sorry for any typos, I'm on my iPhone. Winky Winky

Well looks like barebackchamp beat me to the long ass post but here is my 2 cents.

Well first off I am currently enlisted in the Marines and have been for the past 3 years. I would say if you want to join go ahead but try and get all the information you can about your job ahead of time. Also recruiters lie a lot just to get you to join(yes there are a few that are straightforward about it). Yes they will pay for school when you are in(aka tuition assistance but after you server 2 years), also the Post 9/11 GI Bill that is $50K for 3 years of after you EAS(End of Active Services). With that they pay for school, $1,000 for books per year($500 per semester), and Sgt BAH(Basic Housing Allowance) for the area you go to school. Depending on your MOS they might have different follow-on school that would count for college credits. Now that's the Pros I guess you could say of joining(with school in mind). The negatives are that you basically sign away your life for 4-5 years(depending on your MOS), give up most of your freedom, and deal with stupid hours, stupid people, and retarded ass places. Yes you might get lucky like I did and work very few hours, have some cool people(still have retards no matter where you go), and end up on one of the chilliest bases that the Marine Corps has. But I really doubt you will get that lucky. Now with all that being said if you still are planning on joining the Marines I would say go to college first, have all the fun you can when you are still young. Then after you get a degree join and become a Officer. They make a lot more money then enlisted and deal with else bullshit.

TLDR: The Marine Corps has a lot of Pros, and a lot of Cons.
