(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); CD and DVD ripping will be legalised in the UK as part of new government legislation to update copyright law for the digital age.

From June 1, it will no longer be illegal to copy music, e-books or films you have purchased from one device to another for personal use.

You must login or register to view this content.

However, it will still be illegal to backup content you do not legally own, or make copies for friends or family.

"The changes make small but important reforms to UK copyright law and aim to end the current situation where minor and reasonable acts of copying which benefit consumers, society and the economy are unlawful," said the UK Intellectual Property Office in a statement.

"They also remove a range of unnecessary rules and regulations from the statute book in line with the government's aim to reduce regulation."

Copyright owners will still be able to apply copy protection to their products, but customers will have the right to raise a complaint with the secretary of state if they find it too restrictive.

Both Houses of Parliament will debate the measure before they become law.

Does anyone really care at this point? This should have happened many years ago, it's pretty much pointless now. Either way they have no way to policie this anyway and I don't really feel sorry for not paying for a copy of a game, film or CD.

As long as the person doesn't sell those illegal copies, then it's all good to share with other people.

People have been backing up their media for years, you can copy your music from CD to your phone, or other portable device without getting into trouble, not to mention backing up disks to protect the original, there isn't anyone to police it unless your reported or are selling the copies.

But you will still have the DRM issue, they will not make that legal at the moment.

This is one of those strange topics, the music industry is a little less tight on their restrictions and they knew people would copy their cd's to their mp3 and ipods once they became popular on the market. It's the movie industry that make all these laws and have all the money to do so.

Funny thing about this is your allowed to copy your media but you can not breach the Technical Protection Measure (TPM).
