Above is an image taken from a local television channel in Ukraine that is reportedly showing a Malaysian airliner that has crashed with 295 people on board near the Russian border. The flight was from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
An expert has told the BBC that it is possible that the plane was shot down, and that shooting down a plane at 10,000m would have required a long ranged missile that is most probably guided by radar.
The US will have access to satellite imagery that should be able to identify "ultra-violet plumes" to help find out if the plane was shot down or not.
It is believed to be linked with an earlier incident on Thursday, where Ukrainian officials blamed the Russian air force for shooting down one of its ground attack jets on Wednesday.
