Washington (CNN) -- A CIA assessment puts the number of ISIS fighters at possibly more than three times the previous estimates.
The terror group that calls itself the Islamic State "can muster between 20,000 and 31,500 fighters across Iraq and Syria," a CIA spokesman told CNN on Thursday.
Analysts and U.S. officials initially estimated there were as many as 10,000 fighters, including those who were freed from prisons by ISIS, and Sunni loyalists who have joined the fight as the group advanced across Iraq.
"This new total reflects an increase in members because of stronger recruitment since June following battlefield successes and the declaration of a caliphate, greater battlefield activity and additional intelligence," the spokesman said.
The news came a day after President Barack Obama laid out his plan to "dismantle and ultimately destroy" ISIS, including authorizing airstrikes.
Mass executions and videotaped beheadings, including those of two American journalists, have led to the push for a broader counterterrorism mission, including possible airstrikes in civil war-torn Syria.
It's unclear how the ISIS ranks swelled, and whether the increased numbers include recruits from within Iraq.

"The aim is to DESTROY ISIS " say's Obama.

ISIS and other terrorist groups are putting a bad mark on Muslims.

Yes I don't believe in your religion at all but I still have respect for yours and other peoples faiths.

I feel the big, most powerful countries in the world need to step in and help combat ISIS at this moment in time.

to be honest, if the USA wasn't such dicks (When I say the USA I mean the people running the country) then non of this wouldn't of even happened. I mean take a look at the wikileak tapes, or the Guantanamo bay prisoners. The USA literally blame everything on the Muslim community, but they do these things (sometimes even worse) to other people. If they weren't so corrupt in just finding oil kingdoms then the world would ultimately be a better place. You lot talk about the ISIS because the media focus more on it, but what about the people in Palestine?

The US government think it's okay to torture other citizens from various nationalities but once a group does the same (way more explicit, but still torturing) they get all defensive and say that's wrong, immoral, and inhumane. I'm not justifying the fact that it is even remotely okay, because it is not, but the USA thinks that it itself can never be touched, whilst it attacks other countries. You don't see the news talking about the massacres in Jenin, but because the ISIS is attacking Americans its all over the web and media.

tl;dr America bought this upon itself, and the government + media only focus on what happens to them, they don't care about anybody else. They thrive upon their own biased opinions that everybody seems to listen and agree to.

Actually, America didn't created ISIS or ISIL. What's going on in the Middle East has been going on since World War I when Britain, France, and Russia wanted to eliminated the Ottoman Empire, which at the time was a caliphate. It's all written out in the Sykes-Picot Agreement. I suppose I could do a little synopsis.

The British wanted the Ottoman Empire destroyed because they feared it would have affected the outcome of the war. An agreement was struck and the Arabs were convinced into aiding and fighting against the Ottoman Empire, thanks to T.E. Lawrence for promising them the land of Greater Syria, obviously Britain wasn't going to honor the deal. Shortly there after around 1921 Nazi Germany started to persecute the Jews so Britain then created a two-state Palestine to give the Jews somewhere to go. Mind you this was twenty years prior to the UN declaring Israel a state. But ultimately two scapegoats were created, the Jews and the Palestinians.

Now if you will this is where the United States comes into play. We invaded Iraq in 2003 and took out Saddam Hussein, and when we left that territory was then taken over by ISIL. All ISIL needs next is for the United States to take out Bashar al-Assad and for Israel and Palestine to continue fighting so they kill one another off. Because in the end the Arabs want what they were promised, the Levant.
