(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Welcome to the official thread for "Games of the Week".
If you want to know why I decided to create this thread, click the Spoiler tag below. If not, you can find the very first review just underneath the spoiler.

I wanted to create this thread for both personal* and community benefits.
*(Personal benefits meaning I can gain experience in writing reviews and contributing to the community.)

Every few days I will post a review of a game that I own or have played long enough to write an unbiased review.
If this catches on and gains a lot of popularity, I would encourage people to personal message me (or email me) a full review of any games that they feel the community would appreciate. All credit will be given to the people who write reviews or suggest any games that they would like to see reviewed.

Since I own mostly "Top of the Chart" games, my reviews won't be any different to the websites that specialize in reviewing games, besides the fact that the reviews are my personal opinion of the game.
As this grows, I expect I will purchase any games that the majority would like to see reviewed.

Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoy my reviews whether you agree with them or not.

Welcome to the very first game of Games of the Week.
The first game I will be reviewing is Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

You must login or register to view this content.

Rather than the overused approach on being a Marine, Advanced Warfare puts you in the boots of a soldier contracted into a Private Military Company (PMC) called "Atlas". I was praying that the game would be better than Call of Duty: Ghosts and after playing the campaign for a few days straight, I can say that the story is not what I expected it to be. In fact, it was pretty disappointing.

You start the game off as Jack Mitchell, a young soldier who is very eager to defend his homeland along the side of his lifelong friend, William Irons. During the first mission, Mitchell looses his arm after a freak accident involving a bomb and the debris of the Havoc Launcher - and also looses his friend in the blast.
After a greatly criticised funeral cutscene, you are approached by William Irons' Father (and owner of Atlas) Jonathan Irons. He asks you to join Atlas and in the process, he gives you a bionic arm, trains you to be the best and throws you out into the real world of Atlas.

As I ventured deeper into the Campaign, I soon got bored of how repetitive or similar the objectives became. I felt like I was playing Ghosts but with better visual graphics and weapons. I mean sure, Sledgehammer Games worked hard to create a great game, but for me it just didn't work.

Exo Suits were a game changer for the Call of Duty scene. These gave users the ability for Cloaking, Overclocking, Boost Jumps and more. Fortunately, these amazing abilities were added across all three game modes (Campaign, Multiplayer and Exo Survival). Exo Suits and Exo Abilities come in handy when playing Multiplayer, especially if you're carrying a heavy gun that affects your mobility, because you can Exo Boost behind that wall and avoid the bullets or you can Exo Jump in the air and spray that enemy into the dirt.

Multiplayer was different. Great, but different. Obviously it follows the same approach as every single Call of Duty game before it, but the Exo Suits and Abilities make it feel like a whole different experience. It does get boring really quickly, but what Call of Duty doesn't? No matter how different they are, they will all be the same. With that being said, I do play Multiplayer a lot. I am a self-confessed Multiplayer addict. There a nowhere near as many guns as previous Call of Duty games, but there are a lot of different variations. My favourite is the Bal 227 Obsidian Steed. The other guns and variations have all been tweaked so there is definitely something for everyone.

The campaign visuals are the best of any Xbox One game I currently own (excluding Alien: Isolation).
I first noticed how incredible the visuals were during the Simulation sequence of the Campaign (during training for Atlas and learning how to control your bionic arm) - I was convinced it was real, and then the Simulation ended and I was stunned. The open Headquarters of Atlas were stunning, it felt like I was watching a movie.

Advanced Warfare is a great game visually. The storyline is similar to previous Call of Duty titles however I enjoyed playing the campaign and I am still a regular player of Multiplayer.

Hopefully this years Call of Duty will be just as unique and different as Advanced Warfare is, however I do not expect the Campaign will be much different as nearly every Call of Duty follows the same principles.

Good work Sledgehammer, not bad for a first time.

Once I ditch my Chromebook and get a PC, I was planning to do exactly that. Thanks Toke!

Welcome to the second game of Games of the Week.
I will be reviewing ScreamRide for the Xbox One.

You must login or register to view this content.

ScreamRide is f***ing amazing. Never have I played a game like it. Ever.
It was created by Frontier Developments (who also created another Rollercoaster game - Rollercoaster Tycoon) and I have to say I really enjoyed learning to play it.

The game itself has 3 modes:

  • Building Mode - Design and Create your own chaotic and destructive Rollercoaster.
  • Demolition Expert - Toss Passengers into buildings and cause the most damage.
  • Engineer Mode - Test your Rollercoasters that you made in Building Mode.

The Career mode allows you to understand how to be a 'pilot' in ScreamRider mode and the controls needed in order to keep the coaster under control and on the rails. If you aren't on par with the high expectancy for the level of control needed, you need to get your stuff together. Otherwise you will die and have to repeat the mission repeatedly until you complete it. It's not as hard as it sounds and it also isn't as boring as it sounds - You get to watch people crash into buildings at high speed. What's not to like!

Physics plays a massive role in the game. If you take a turn too sharply and too fast, you'll derail and die.
Too slow on a jump? Have fun being dead. Bored of dying? Looking for a little more.. boom? Well you're in luck!
In the game there are these big red zones, they are explosives. If you hit them with your passengers, you're in for a treat. Sit back, relax and watch in awe as a huge building goes up in flames and explodes causing the building to shatter into thousands of pieces and your points skyrocket.

In Career Mode you need to achieve or succeed the amount of points in order to progress. There are additional objectives in each level which will allow you to get a score bonus if you hit them - which for you keen players that strive for completion, will result in a rather large point bonus.
(I would advise you try to finish Career Mode first, before attempting any other mode, as it allows you to completely understand every control and aspect of the game.)

I eventually found myself regularly playing Engineer Mode, and that is justified by the fact that it's incredibly fun.
In this mode you have to complete pre-built rollercoasters so they meet a certain criteria. This is where you will need to know some information about G-Force, Nausea and other ratings that you will not get told about if you skip the Career Mode.

Besides the murder of test dummies and constant building destruction, I didn't like the game. You're encouraged to make as much damage as possible, and while that is really fun, it gets boring really quick.
It was nowhere near as good as Rollercoaster Tycoon. In fact, I actually loaded up Rollercoaster Tycoon on my pretty much destroyed PC, because ScreamRide didn't fulfil my Rollercoaster needs.

I think ScreamRide is great because of there is nothing else out there like it. If it wasn't confined to just rollercoasters, I think it has potential to be amazing. Never the less, it is an incredibly enjoyable game. You can switch between modes and it really helps with spicing things up!

It's not the most gripping and I definitley couldn't play it for hours on end, it is unique in the way it approached that genre, considering they already created Rollercoaster Tycoon - so there wasn't much competition, except they now had the challenge of beating a game they had already made.

In summary, I would play it again. Not regularly, but if I was bored and had nothing to do or if I was with friends and wanted to laugh... I'd fire it up and blow up a bunch of explosion zones for sure!
The graphics are fairly good for what it is, but don't expect much from it as it's far from amazing.

Fun at first but gets boring really quick. Could do with some improvement (perhaps as a sequel rather than DLC - so more time can go into the thought and design process).

Good job Frontier Developments. Zoo Tycoon remains my favourite though, sorry.
