At roughly 7pm BST, reddit created an announcement stating they'll be removing subreddits that they deem harassing. In total, five subreddits have been removed since the announcement. Four of these subreddits had under 5,000 subscribers, You must login or register to view this content. had over this.

"We will ban subreddits that allow their communities to use the subreddit
as a platform to harass individuals when moderators don’t take action. We’re banning
behavior, not ideas."

The banning of this subreddit has caused a huge backlash within the reddit community, causing You must login or register to view this content. to become overflown with hundreds of posts towards fat people, with some even targeting the current CEO of Reddit. Subreddits have been created in an attempt to try and get Ellen Pao (Reddit CEO) to resign after the decisions that have been made, calling it You must login or register to view this content.

Well to me it makes no difference, I only use /r/wtf and /r/tifu anyway. I do think they made the right decision because when it boils down it is just hate and harassment. I guess Reddit is trying to clean up its image somewhat.

Maybe people shouldn't expect an independently operated discussion board to give them the internet freedom to harass others. If they want to express their hatred of fat people - they can do so by making their own internet discussion board or outbid Advance Publications as reddit's primary shareholder. Pao shouldn't resign and if the threats turn violent, she should take legal action and authorities would bust some of these hatemongers. Nothing would snuff out this "revolt" faster than knowing that they have no legal or moral justification for their actions and that hostility and aggression will result in trials and community sentencing.

I believe in freedom...I believe in freedom for everyone, though. Someone's freedom to hate does not translate to their freedom to express that hatred through any medium they want.

I don't understand this. The only thing this did was make these people who were contained to that sub-reddit go nuts and spam their shit everywhere else. Admins claim it was removed due to harassment yet subs like SRS and SRD stay alive even though their mods and users dox people all the time. Something fishy is going on with this and it doesn't make much sense at all.
