I remember a thread about producing music, but what about recording it :p.
My buddies and I are making a band and I was researching recording methods, I came across what's called an audio interface and/or a digital audio workstation (D.A.W.).
Now to my understanding, PLEASE correct me if I am wrong lol... What an audio interface is/does is record music and puts them on your computer.
So you connect your guitar, play some chords and it all goes on the computer right away automatically? And as long ass you play it cleanly, the playback will be clean?
Same with the bass, piano, and vocals?
I got a mic to record in front of my amp and meh it's okay but the interface sounds great.
Explain more if anyone can and thanks in advance!
Basically, an audio interface acts as a an external soundcard that you can plug into your computer. You can then plug in studio monitors, or instruments such as a guitar or microphone so you can record it. You will need a DAW to capture the sound from the audio interface and you will need to configure your audio interface with your DAW so you will be able to record audio. Do some research into what audio interface you should get. I haven't used it but I've heard a few people recommending the Scarlett range. The Scarlet 2i2 kept coming up in reviews from producers on facebook groups I'm in. The more you pay, the better the audio inferface will be and the quality you can achieve
First, I suggest picking what DAW you want to go with. Audacity is free if you don't want to pay. FL Studio is good but look into other DAWs for recording. This will depend on what Operating System you will be using. I suggest either Pro Tools, Logic or Ableton
I also suggest getting some microphones for recording instruments that don't have a jack input (eg. drums and vocals). Do some research into what microphones to get as you might need different microphones for different things. You will also need cables to connect the instruments to the audio interface, as well as a quiet environment. You can get this stuff at a reasonable price but if you are serious about doing it and have the money to do so, spend a bit more to get better things.
