Post: See if this gun law makes sense to you

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Before I start, I want to say that I am not really trying to open up the discussion of an individuals right to bear arms, including what age at which a person may exercise that right. However I realize that discussion may come up. If so, please be respectful. This is a topic many people have very strong feelings on. Lets keep the hate and personal attacks out of this thread.

So I live in Indiana. I am 18 years old. In June of 2015, I discovered that I was able to apply for my License to Carry a Handgun (LTCH). I thought I had to be 21, but after filling out my application, paying my fees, and waiting, I received my LTCH in August. I don't carry much, but I have before and it is nice to know I have the legal option of doing so. When I turned 18, my Dad gave me his .357 magnum revolver, which was passed to him by his older brother. So I have never bought a firearm. This past Christmas, my dad told me that he really needed to replace his personal carry ammunition, as it was old (unsafely so). I went to our local gun dealer, and had a discussion with one of the salesmen about what he was looking for, and after about 30 mins of debating, I decided what to get him. Come to find out when I tried to buy the ammo, I cannot purchase handgun ammo until I am 21, despite having a LTCH. After research, I also discovered I am unable to purchase handguns until I am 21.

To me, this is some seriously flawed logic. I have the legal right to carry a handgun, but cannot technically purchase/own one. My .357 is still in my Dad's name and we were planning on getting it transferred to my name. However, after my discovery, we obviously had to put this off until I am 21. Now the law to carry a handgun was changed from 21 to 18 within the past year, so it is entirely possible that uniformity in the laws simply hasn't happened yet. However this seriously bothered me. Knowing I can't purchase ammo, this also means I cannot go out and practice shooting without my Dad or another adult with me, despite the fact that I can legally carry my gun. It makes no logical sense. I realize I am in a minority since not many people in Indiana have a LTCH who are under 18, but the point in this thread was to ask, is there something I am simply not seeing? What logic justifies an 18 year old being allowed to carry a loaded gun, but not being able to purchase the ammo for it?

this put a smile on my face 10/10 lol

Honestly, it's probably one of those things where your state officials lowered the age to possess but either forgot about the other laws or they are experiencing some stonewalling from people who don't think you should be allowed to purchase a handgun and ammo until you are 21. This reminds me of the whole shindig about being able to enlist at 18 years of age, but you can't purchase alcohol until you're 21. Regardless, what you are experiencing is the stupidity of the thousands of laws on the books regarding firearms. Unfortunately, people don't realize adding more is not the answer.

Lol. Figuratively. But yeah after I posted this, the idea of people stonewalling legislation did cross my mind. I need to do some more research and find out if there are any proposed bills waiting to be voted on that would change the law.

Well the license to carry is a per state / city type of thing where the law for owning a handgun is federal. In any case it doesn't make any sense why they would change that knowing an 18 year old can't legally own one. Now it's entirely possibly for you to own a rifle but that's a different beast.

As for going to a gun range. That's a little different. You could technically shoot one there you just can't own one. Just like you can shoot any fully automatic as long as the owner of the weapon is present.

I remember when I was at a store buying .22LR and I was asked what type of gun it was for. I was like huh, I forgot they have .22LR pistols and they require an ID to purchase it for a handgun but not a rifle.

People are always like we need more gun laws when the ones we currently have make no fucking sense most of the time.

The problem with going to the range is, I can't buy the ammo to practice with sadly. Even though I don't technically own the .357, I could take it there and shoot off the 12 rounds I do have for it if I so chose. But I wouldn't waste holopoint rounds on paper targets.

I wonder if I had gone to the store and told them I had an MP5 chambered in .45 if they would have sold it to me. Probably not, but I'm slightly curious. I might go in there and talk with the guys just for the hell of it.

Although I do understand your point about maturity, it is relative to each individual person. I know some people who are in their mid 20s who act like they are 16. And by that I don't simply mean partying every weekend or something like that. I mean they literally act like teenagers in that if they don't get their way, they get pissed off or depressed. Its hard to describe, but you know there is a difference in how a 16 year old is expected to act, and a 26 year old is expected to act. I'm not trying to brag here, but I have been told for most of my teenage and young adult life that I act significantly more mature than my age. I wouldn't be opposed to the laws changing to where you would have to take a class in order to obtain a permit to carry, and some states such as Illinois already require this. As for everyone having tranq guns, well, that simply won't happen. Lol.

Honestly I hope we have a better president that will hopefully fix that law cuz this is some bs. Maybe it just depends on the state. I live in Cali and we are allowed to buy guns 18 but handguns at 21. We can get ammo at age 18 but to get ammo for a handgun, you have to be 21. THANKS OBAMA lmao jk :salute:
