Personal view virtual reality won't be big hit gaming wise but media like movies on mobiles. Pushing forward the tech mobile phones being the main driver.
Virtual reality makes sense on mobiles due to being able view movies on bigger screen. Instead increasing mobile phone screen size why not beam the image straight to your eyes.

Design point of view user interface with control input becomes big problem.
Another issue motion sickness issue couple companies have looked into audio solutions as fixes.

Drop the price to affordable, then sure it could be a mainstay. But in my opinion having a vr be the same price of a new console is a bad move, especially if it doesn't do well and games aren't designed for the gimmick. Sony has tried many of times to reach out to their consumerbase with new ways to get into the action: PS3 Eye, PlayStation Camera, Move Controllers, the vita, and they are either rarely used by the developers or rarely used by the consumers. I know there's going to be a Star Wars Battlefront made just for the PS4 VR, but what if even that's not good enough?

I feel it'll fade. You don't see too many commercials for 3D TVs as much as you use to. And it definitely won't take off in gaming. Of course I say that subjectively as I don't plan on going to VR. I just don't like the idea of playing video games in a VR setting. I like the experience of either sitting on the sofa and playing a console -- could also be a bed. Or sitting at a desk behind a keyboard and a mouse.
