My dad and I have this talk a lot. He is an avid supporter of concealed carry. In his opinion, you shouldn't carry if you aren't going to conceal your firearm, not because it will scare people or anything like that, but because it puts a target on you. If someone is going to put you in a life threatening situation, to the point where using a firearm would be appropriate, they are going to aim for you first. To him, you are at a tactical disadvantage if you open carry. I definitely see his point, and I relate it to a sniper in my mind. The only thing that makes a sniper so deadly is the element of surprise, otherwise he is just another guy holding a rifle. However my train of thought is that by open carrying, I may possibly deter anyone from trying anything in the first place. This is without a doubt a huge risk as my dad is right, I do have a target on my back by open carrying, but it is a risk I willingly take.
EDIT: I always ask myself two questions before I leave my house carrying a firearm, because there is no denying, I carry death on my hip. 1) Am I ready to kill someone today? and 2) Am I ready to die today? That sounds really dark but that is the cold reality of carrying a gun. If I answer no to either of those questions, I won't carry.
