Short version
Loads of jumps due to so much hardware along with standards to add to every update. Every phone network has it own apps/standards to apply.
Little wonder why custom updates are being used by many people.
My brother couldn't be bothered waiting ages for to receive the update so he just bought a stock nexus 5 from google. He gets the updates allot quicker then my S4..

Thts the reason why i went back to iPhone, by the time the S4 would get 4.4 or 4.4.2, 5.0 will be out.

It does suck with the lengthy updates, but I don't see it as a reason to switch to ios, as there is always alternative roms you could use as people normally modify the latest update to work on your device.
Also as you said the updates take ages to come. my brother got kitkat about a month after the announcement. After a month he had it, I only got android 4.3... not kit Kat.
