Its very rare for a virus on a android. I have been using my phone for 3 years and haven't seen/got a virus. If you're side loading apps, be careful from where you download. I would recommend Avast or AVG. If you're rooted you can install Xprivacy. It prevents data from leaking. For example you can block the use of GPS for an app.
