On the phone when i tap on enable sync, a message appears in the notification bar saying 'Android system sync disabled, please re-enable and try again'. I went into the settings and synced all but still nothing.

After Google'ing your problem I clicked on the first link I saw and read through a few replies, this guy has seemed to of found it.

I have a Sony Xperia, there's no sync icon on the drop down menu.

Hmm, then I recommend posting on a Android forum, maybe the one I linked above or another.

i got it, i had to add the sync button to the drop menu then enable the button and it syncs properly now.
