It overtakes the previous record of 1.41m units sold by Call of Duty: Black Ops back in November 2010.
GTA 5 has also taken $800m worldwide in 24 hours, Take-Two has announced, adding that "it marks the highest first day retail sales of any title in the history of the company and the Grand Theft Auto series".
Rockstar's game was released on Tuesday (September 17), with 2,000 retailers opening at midnight to host launch events.
Grand Theft Auto 5 also received over two million mentions on Twitter in a 24-hour period surrounding its release.
The game has been met with universal critical acclaim, with Digital Spy giving it five stars.
