not sure about commending other players timer, but i can confirm if u turn off ur ps3 just as u get the bad sort confirmation, then when u reload it hasn't stuck and you can carry on as normal. done this about 20 x now

But won't the xp and money you've recently got since the last save not store?

it auto saves often. After cop chases, putting money in the bank, doing missions/ races etc.... tbh there hasn't been any noticeable loss each time I've done it. i haven't rolled back to a previous rank or lost any money i can notice? also i would say that if u know your close to getting the dunce hat, then just manual save every now and then by using the character wheel.
