I'm sure the most of you know that Microsoft now owns Mojang the creator and developer of the ever-so popular game Minecraft.

Up to the recent past couple weeks has there been issues for Server Owners, and Minecraft Server hosts thats going to hurt their clientele and monthly earnings. Microsoft and the developer of Craftbukkit (Wolverness) have officially issues DCMA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) takedown acts against these popular projects;

3. Tekkit
4. Feed The Beast
and more to carry on ..

The official DCMA message read ..

The provided license requires the use of included or linking code to provide the original source under the GNU GPL license version 3, or any later version. An official notice has been sent to Mojang AB, whereas the Chief Operating Officer, [private], responded with the clear text: Mojang has not authorized the inclusion of any of its proprietary

Minecraft software (including its Minecraft Server software) within the Bukkit project to be included in or made subject to any GPL or LGPL license, or indeed any other open source license

As the Minecraft Server software is included in CraftBukkit, and the original code has not been provided or its use authorized, this is a violation of my copyright. I have a good faith belief the distribution of CraftBukkit includes content of which the distribution is not authorized by the copyright owner, it's agent, or the law.

Pages including infringing content:

and every subsequent commit, including all forks that contain this commit

I swear, under penalty of purjury, that the information in this notification is accurate and that I am the copyright owner, or am authorized to act on behalf of the owner, of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.

Pursuant to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. ยง 512(c)), the above mentioned pages need to be expeditiously removed or access-of disabled.

After that TLAwesome faceR message all the current project developers have been fighting to get this DCMA Takedown reversed for the good.

Do you think this act is fair? Do you believe that Server Project Developers should be allowed to make there own server versions with the understanding that anything that goes on user side is there affair? Or do you believe that only the true owner of Minecraft should be the one allowed to post server builds?

Talk about this below as I'm diffidently interested in what some of you have to say.

Thanks for reading,
NSS.

Generally speaking its up to who owns the IP. However since mojang was so lenient with what people did with their game, stuff like this was allowed to happen.
I am not sure if I am reading this right. You said MS and CraftBukkit were going after:
1. Spigot
2. CraftBukkit
3. Tekkit
4. Feed The Beast
and more to carry on ..

Why would they be going after themselves? Was this a typo are is there 2 floating out there with the same name?
Either way it's a shame. Alot of those custom builds were fun to play one. FTB being one of them. They are just hurting themselves in the long run by cracking down onto something that hasn't ever been an issue before.

It's a LONG debate.. But MineCraft apparently owns Bukkit and not CraftBukkit, it was a long heated-debate between them.
