Have you looked on apple's website? Apple TV is a device to watch movies, tv shows and other digital media. Lyon can also utilities "air play" to view your MacBook. iPad, iPhone screens on your tv via the Apple TV. It's a fun and neat toy to have however I don't find it to be a replacement for cable yet.
