For a lot of games, yes that's what it does, takes away the player ID and adds your ID so you can continue with the save you've downloaded and continue the game.
Some games it will simply pop every trophy in the game and give an instant Plat - fine if you simply want an instant Plat but no skill prevailing.
It can be convenient for games where you need to complete multiple times - so you might need to playthrough a game legit then using Xploder will get you to final boss on hard - you still need to beat him/her. Dead Space2 is a good example - there are saves for Zealot & Hard to the Core but meaningless without playing the game legit.

That's what will drive the urge for legit looking plats. If people just start hacking every little trophy, eventually it will lead to bad things, plus there is no point in just blatantly hacking any game. Took me 60 plats to figure that one out.

yeah i have to admit the white one looks nice, but my chrome plated PS3 looks better
