Use Sony Vegas if you're a beginner, After Effects will be way too confusing for you.

Oh jeez the person up there who said vegas is good for 3d Intros must know nothing.

What I use is:

Montage/Editing- Sony Vegas
3D Intros- 3DS Max Studio 2010 (AE Is also a good choice)
Cinema 4D is another 3D program which many use.
Vegas is definetly for editing. You cant really edit a montage in After effects, just a clip at max. Maybe add an effect or two then do the rest in vegas. Trust me Vegas is way easier to use, and will give you a somewhat similar result if not better IMO.

I;ve been at this for a while now so I think its some good advice. You can try what you like, but your not gonna get anything better than this...

hopefully I can shed some light here for ya...

Adobe After Effects - This is not a video editing program in terms of trimming clips and assembling clips as you would in a montage. This program is mostly used for animations and adding effects after a clip is completed. That being said, there are plenty of features available for cleaning up footage... such as keying or changing the core bits of footage.

Vegas - this is a program that you should use for assembling your clips, trimming, adding transitions and some effects. Sony Vegas is very user friendly. You can probably jump right in and assemble a tage. I would start here for your montage editing. Smile

Now, if you're looking to make some crazy studio9 or JoeHands0me editing, you'll probably use a combo.

Here is a primary example of combing the two programs. This is something I edited. I'm not the greatest editor. I have some skill and I'm always learning. Smile

Let me know if I can answer any additional questions for you.
