When i'm smudging i us the chalk brush with scattering, size jitter and strength jitter

you can usually get some good things with that

its all in trial and error. u have to try different settings and figure out what looks good. try using different brushes and different random brush settings. its all apart of building your own style . but if u have absolutely no clue what your doing with all those settings, then just try and find some tutorials (most of the smudging tutorials ive seen tell you to use your own settings). as for the picture you have of that certain smudging...its a little too blurry to be able to tell much about it. can u maybe link me to the video (or whatever it is) so i can get a better view of it =D

My smudging improved drastically when I started using a graphics tablet.
Makes it easier and gives you better control.
