if your using photoshop you can do it very easily... itll look a bit sloppy but you can blend it nicely with the background... heres what i mean by sloppy

I dunno about GIMP but heres a tip for photoshop. Something like this you would go to "select" on the top menu. Then you would select "color range". Select the black with the eye dropper and mess with the scale. Hit OK and then go to "select" again and select "inverse". Then drag it to your sig. You can do it that way because you have a solid black bg.
