(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Hello,
I am a beginning graphic designer. I have completed 2 semesters of computer graphics at my high school and have been editing for about 8 months. I have experience in Paint.NET, Photoshop CS5.1, and CINEMA 4D. Since I'm fairly new, I would very much appreciate some feedback from some of NGU's more hardened designers ^^

My work thus-far:

This piece was just be playing around with shapes, colors and filters. I thought it looked pretty good.

Just in general, I can see that you have some definite idea of what you're doing, but not all of your knowledge translates into your work. For instance, the tag in your signature has good use of lights and darks in the background, and good directionality. Unfortunately, the focal is too dark compared to the background and gets lost in it; the colors are monochrome, and end up being very boring to look at; the text is big, placed awkwardly and has no artistic meaning on the canvas.

I'm hard-pressed to believe your graphic design professor hasn't stressed typography as being one of - if not the - most important aspect in a piece of design.

But of course, with time comes practice, and with practice comes evolution. Build off what you have now. In your next tag try to incorporate more colors, and smartly - maybe try the old standby blue/orange (a simple introduction here: You must login or register to view this content.). The most important thing to do now, though, is just practice. Keep looking at tutorials (I have a ton of GIMP tutorials here: You must login or register to view this content.) and keep making tags. With every one you'll get better with your tools, you'll get feedback from your fellow artists (both constructive and otherwise) and you'll improve.

Welcome to NGU. =3

Really appreciate the welcoming and support. I tried to use your advice and ended up with this.. You must login or register to view this content.
I suppose when I have more time I will try and go back to make it into a signature and perhaps put some Oranges and Yellow brushes in it or something.
And on behalf of the awkward text, the font was called "MadeInChina" and I was a little too excited to use it with the piece :satisfied:
Hahaha lastly, I checked out you devianart page (Even bookmarked it Smile) great content on there!

I turned my canvas into four quadrants (put guides half way on both x and y axis), Used the rectangular marquee to select a quadrant (Snapping helps here) and then filled each with it's own color. After that, I then used the twirl function.

Filter > Distort > Twirl

After the twirl, I made a path from the origin to two corners, ending back at the origin, and converted it into a selection. inverted that selection, and deleted the excess.
I repeated four times for each color scheme.

If this is confusing, I would be more than glad to make a visual tutorial :bro:

I personally used a plug-in for a free photo editor called Paint.NET because at the time I didn't have photoshop.

If you're interested;

Ah, blurring the background to make it seem like your camera's focus is on the grass. Nice concept, but the silhouetted grass is much too hard to distinguish from the rest of the piece (especially that ridiculously thick black border, try to stay away from those lol) that you lose that idea and everything ends up looking like you just used blurry stocks or effects. You definitely have an eye for composition, with time you'll definitely get that down.

And thanks for the compliment. =3

As a tip, don't put your work in spoiler tags, it's an unnecessary extra step to have to go through.

I agree with every thing you said lol. In retrospect, the border is absolutely ridiculous like you said. Perhaps the problem originated because I was using black as my background in photoshop? Would like to know which you prefer. I can't decide between black, white, grey, or this dark blue I had previously.
As for the grass, I brushed some more in the back and blurred that which I think helps give the image more depth and ends up with more of the effect I had imagined :ca:
Ps I only used spoilers to build suspense :carling:

I personally start with a white background, but I know plenty of people who start black, it's all preference.

As for the grass, again the silhouette style makes it that much harder to distinguish anything, especially the more subtle things like a second layer of grass.
