This is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK which basically means it is safe to turn on and off.

Scroll down to where you see "iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad/Apple TV"
Click on the dropdown box and select your 4.2.1 firmware.

PLEASE USE FIREFOX TO DOWNLOAD FOR ANY UNWANTED ERRORS.

Now we Begin...

1.
Download "greenpois0n" this is the jailbreak software that is being used for this tut.

Sorry if you're using Linux there isn't version for you guys yet will edit this post ASAP as soon as the download is available.

2.
Connect your iDevice to your Mac/PC
Close iTunes if it pops up.

3. Open up Greenpois0n
(There are on-screen instructions, but these are easier to follow)

4.Mac Users: it's a little easier for us! :carling:
Just hit the jailbreak button and you are pretty much done!
(Scrolling text on screen is normal let it sit for about 3-5 min)
(Wait for Reboot)
[Skip to step 5]

4.b PC Users: Click the "Prepare to Jailbreak (DFU) and IMMEDIATELY preform the steps below.

4.c Hold the LOCK/SLEEP button for 3 seconds

4.d Without letting go of the LOCK/SLEEP button hold the HOME button for 10 seconds together.

4.e After holding both buttons for 10 seconds release the LOCK/SLEEP button and keep holding onto the HOME button until the countdown timer disappears.

(if you mess up it's fine. Connect to PC and just do a hard reset by holding down the lock/sleep button + home button until the screen turns off, and begin to redo the DFU process above)

[Scrolling Text should appear as this is normal let it sit for about 3-5 min]

5. Now that your iDevice has booted back up scroll to your second page of apps and click the loader app.

6. Install Cydia by clicking on it.
(The first time you launch Cydia it will take a little while to load so PLEASE BE PATIENT and it will reboot automatically)
[Install UPDATES ASAP]

Congrats! You have a jailbroken iDevice!

1. Launch Cydia
2. Hit the "manage" tab
3. Hit "sources"
4. Hit "edit"
5. Hit "add"
6. Enter You must login or register to view this content. [AS SHOWN]
7. After adding, hit done.
8. On the list of sources tap "Hackulo.us"
9.Install Installous 4 install AppSync 4.0+ aswell if it isn't already.
10. Go back home and launch installous "green arrow"
11.Tap settings make sure install automatically is ON aswell as iTunes Sync. Disable mobilehunt.
12. Tap Done.

Search for ANY APP you want and install.

If im already jailbroken 4.2.1 with redsn0w can I re-jailbreak again or do I have to restore my Iphone 3gs???

It's best if you do a fresh restore then jailbreak.

Yeah, after you jailbreak there should be a package you can install called ultrasn0w which is basically a carrier unlock. it's by repo666.ultrasn0w.com click on their source install the package and restart your phone. :bro:

i am a little bit confused what network does it lock to? as i only have vodafone and t-mobile sim cards. so i would need a correct sim to be in the phone for me to unlock it?... again sorry for the dumb questions i just couldn't find anything that answers this.
