It is against anti-trust laws as they would then own over 85% of the market. That is considered a monopoly.

i work for a at&t support center and if im not mistaken at&t bought a small portion of verizion there was a update in our system talking about it and giving details on how to switch the customers that wonted to switch over to at&t plans. so we didnt by the whole company just a little portion of it. but t mobile is ours lol.
