but i had a palm centro where i didnt need a data plan. i dropped it into water and now im mad. :FU: i know its possible but you need to hack the phone in some way

All current smartphones require a data plan on Verizon. The Palm Centro was one of the last ones that could be activated without a data plan. I don't believe you could "hack" the phone and get it activated on Verizon as all CDMA phones have an ESN (Electronic Serial Number) or MEID (Mobile Equipment Identifier) that tells the carrier the type of phone that you are trying to activate. So you cannot take an iPhone or Android and attempt to activate it without Verizon knowing it's a smartphone and forcing you to add a data plan. In the past with GSM Carriers like AT&T, people could get a SIM card and then put it in a smartphone and get away with not adding a data plan. AT&T seems to have developed a way to check this but I'm not to familiar with how they do it and if you can still do that.

If you do decide to stay with Verizon and are willing to get a data plan, get one with a smartphone before July 7th as several tech blogs are reporting that Verizon is dropping unlimited data and moving to a tiered model that is pricey.
