There are a ton of cool apps you can download, let me know what you have interest in doing and I can let you know of some good ones. There are personalization, games, social apps you should check out also, rooting your phone will allow you much more control over personalization and limits on the phone.

you can root it just check on the xda forums i think they have some guides my gf has that phone the root process isn't to bad. rooting a phone nowadays has become more boring. the best thing you can do with android phones (in general) are change layouts details size of apps colors of phone. etc. etc. nothing really special. i'd root it though it's still fun.
and if you are good with programming you should maybe look into building your own custom rom.

if this is your first android device i got some recomendations. dont root. wait till you need root untill you do it. most people doit to be cool but dont use it for anything. get some apps. try out crackle. its a movie app. pretty good. some a the best game out are angry birds, amazing alex, 100 floors, pottery lite. there are thousands of different things you can do. just depends on what you want to do. only real reason most people root is for free hotspot
