Updating the game won't cause any harm. I use PSNPatch whenever connecting to Playstation services though. Also, if you don't feel comfortable updating through their servers then you could try a package file (.pkg). This will update the game to whatever version you want but just ensure it works for your region of game (find you region code on the disc or case) otherwise it may not work.
