After World Of War came out into the international gaming markets in 2004, MMO have turned from niche- products to mega products. When Funcom became the devolpment of Anarchy online, once in the 1990s, studio identified 25 000 players to be large scale success. Today major corporations are ready to use 100 million dollars to their own MMO games, for example EA's Bioware Star Wars: The Old Rebublic. Also the indie devolpers like Icarus Studio and Avatar Creations have decided to start making MMO. Intially, relatively small market is becoming increasingly complex.
World Of Warcraft was realesed in 2004 and reached a much larger than its presuccesor games.

Enthuasiasm has given players more choice than before. Weekly millions of players adventure sword in hand in Tana world of Azeroth, while thousands of others fighting for resources in the New Eden galaxy. Genre plenty of mapping and there is no shortage of interesting virtual words. Keep in mind this games are only tip of an iceberg, to the gamers who aren't familiar with MMO.

M. .. M. .. O. ..?

MMO becames from the English words Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game - freely translated massiveonlineroleplaying. In some contexts you can see the full abbreviation MMORPG, its often too cumbersome and heavy, so now it's common to write MMO, which in the otherhand can refer to other massiveonlineroleplaying games. Under the heading, has been devolped games from racing to shooting. MMO games, basic idea is always different than in simpler online games.

MMO is based like many other genres into virtual world, but player meets artificial intelligence, and other players online. Game world will also keep on living after the player exits the game. Technically the MMO's rely on their own servers, which mostly supports thousands of players online simultaneously. Players are able to hang out, explore or even fight again each other. Socializing is very important part of MMO gaming, in several representatives of the genre can be found system, a kind of guilds, which are designed to help playing together.
One of the attractions in the genre is to have hundreds or thousands players living in the same virtual world.

many MMO fans think that the social aspect is what makes the genre interesting. Concept, which we live in virtual world with other people attracts over and over again. The single player game worlds may seem living with thier AI population, it's nothing like the feeling while playing Eve online and watching spaceships come and go in real time.

Subscriptions VS Free To Plays

World Of Warcraft boom broke a few years go, many parents buying the game to their offspring were suprised to hear that the game needs a subscription after 30 days trialing. Subscriptions have divided players opinions, but the concept has long been part of the MMO games at least here in the western countrys.

Very recently, a familiar business model is, however changing, and the charges are no longer self-evident. Free to play(often abbreviated F2P) is a growing trend, and even before paid MMO games is are inspired by this and have changed their game to F2P.
F2P model, maintance costs is covered by micro-payments small objects sold in the game.
This business model has also made controversy, but it's no longer a taboo to MMO gamers like in the past.
Lord Of The Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar became free last year and increased the sales up by 600%.

Own options offer too by the so-called freerium model, which combines elements from subscription model and from F2P. Freerium type of games , can be played without subscription, but paid fee will unlock numerous additional feataures. Lord of the Rings Online is probably one of the best known examples in this area, and also the Champions Online is seeking a similar solution.

MMO games future business models are still unclear, it remains to see will micro-payments replace subscription fees or will games evenly divide to the different payment models. But its neverthless sure that monthly payments are no longer a barrier to MMO game experimentation. There are a lot of different options, and most of the games clearly indicates how is the feeds charged from the costumer.

The Game Mechanics Definition.

Today MMO games are divided into two different styles: amusment parks and sand boxes. Many games borrow and combine both of them, but this disaggeregation explains very fundamental difference in games desing. Both styles offers the sophistications and its own problems, and in internet there are some spicy discussions which one is better.
Icelandic Eve Online is one of the most famous examples of sand box MMO form.

Amusment park type games is considered a classic MMO game, such World Of Warcraft represents. In such game everybody can exprience all the sights and to see every location. Popcorn and candy is enough, because the game is designes to exprience. Clear signs telling where to go next. "Everyone gets to be a hero, everyone can catch the dragon," Eve Online created, CCP Games Executive Director Hilmar Pétursson once aptly said.

Sandbox instead lets player more freely influence the gameplay. Players can build their own castle, or even go pissed off to kick sand in your friends eyes. Eve Online is a classic example of a such sandbox game. In it player formed alliances can create their own empire and go to war against their enemies. As you can imagine, a sandbox type MMO's require more from players than amusment parks: If you are not pro at building sandcastles, and can't see all the opportunities, the exprience does not deformable very memorable.

As I said earlier, some games seeks infulence from both styles. For example, in Star War Galaxies players can do great adventures and be either the rebels or the empire heroes. At the same time it's also possible to create an alliance and build entire cities. Everguest II and The Lord of The Rings Online- both largely convetional amusment park rides - includes player made homes, where you can spend hours refining all the interior. And in Runes of Magic, players have been given keys to build their own castles.

Past

MMO games one advantage is their longevity. While in the genre's history there is also room for financial flops and premature closure, Tabula Rasan and Acheron's Call 2: being the most significant failures, many old games still does well. Original Everquest, which was published in 1999, is celebrating its 12th birthday this year. Ultima Online was released on 1997 and its still played. First Acherons Call, despite the old graphics is still standing. Vanguard: Saga Of Heroes had already appeared on the verge of death published, but is still avaible, although the player base has shrunk to almost nothing.
Everguest was released in 1999, but still haves solid player base.

Longevity has many causes, most of them are commercial. To players, however, the reasons aren't as important as the fact that there are tons of games which to choose. Several old games also benefit from their long maintance time, providing a quantity of contents that new entrants can't not even compete the veterans in content. After releasing WOW in year 2004 it has received three extensions - Everguest got its 17th extension last year. which appeared in the same year as World of Warcraft, has expanded seven times.

In considering today it's easy to forget the older the older representatives of the genre, because they do not appear in the mainstream media so often. However they provide the basis for the living history that can still be reached. Many veteran games are also quite cheap and definetly worth of attention - if you can take the old graphics.

Present

In a sense, World of Warcraft could be calculated as one of the parent MMO games on the market, noticing the game's seven years of age. But when the third extension Cataclysm sold 3.3 million copies in its first 24 hours in the last Christmas and the World of Warcraft haves 12 million players worldwide, it is difficult not to read it carefully into modernity. Even today as gaming companies as MMO players use the Blizzard behemoth as a sort of benchmark, the new entrant enters the genre. World of Warcraft able to borrow a lot of its predecessors massiveroleplaying, but without success created a new game genre, which defined a new standard for what people now expect online role games.

World of Warcraft managed to change before a sort of nichen position at the time of the genre by giving it a great value for the public's attention. Much of the success, of course, is crystallized in the fact that the game is indeed made by Blizzard, which has games such as Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo merit in its list. The game also straightened the MMO-game formula, and made the genre more accessible to new audiences.

Player masses surfing higher then before, many multi-game boss's business instincts woke up and they began to dream of their own MMO hits to collect millions of players. World of Warcraft was considered proof that the genre hobbyers and the markets had suddenly risen to a new level.
Rift appeared earlier this year, many were amazed at the high level of finish.

Over the years, such an approach has not proven to be one hundred percent correct. World of Warcraft has a lot of players who do not play it because it's an MMO, but because it is just World of Warcraft. Such players are not in need of alternative of games. The market had to learn the lesson the hard way. Some of the new games were labeled immediately as simple in WoW clones, some sold convincing quantities during the first month - only to confront the collapse of the customer base when the games free time ended.

Recently, attention has raised the trio Worlds fresh contender Rift. MMO games include in its publication usually still plenty of bugs and defects, but the rift proved remarkably stable and relatively free of defects. It has much in common with World of Warcraft with the terms of the basic game mechanics, and the arguments it being WoW clone are not entirely uncommon. Nevertheless, the Rift has managed to capture the imagination of many players. How bright is the future of the game, it remains to be seen, but at least for the time being, it seems that the Trion might have their hands on one of recent historys most successful MMO games.

Other theme style games mentioned the Age of Conan, which is the beginning difficulties and player loss has received several updates and one additional component. Cryptic Star Trek Online release, in turn, was a fierce criticism from fans, but the game has since improved significantly from its beginning. Post-Apocalypse stuff can be found on the search for Fallen Earth. And F2P games market continues to grow, bringing Allods Online and the The Forsaken World, such games to play without compulsion to buy them.

Eve Online represented MMO games before World of Warcraft, but in a considerable graphics updates it feels and works like any other modern MMO. Eve Online is the most popular type of sandbox massiveonlineroleplaying and player amount is reported to be approximately 360 000 subscribers. Darkfall Online, which fulfills the box with its relentless and brutal fantasysandbox.

Future

Perhaps the most significant question mark on MMO genre right now is EA BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic. EA has pumped into the game jaws clanking sums of money, hoping that Bioware - many magnificent traditional RPG games developer - could produce an incredible success story in the online environment. Pressures will squeeze developers in the neck, as fans and critics will certainly complain about the slightest irregularity. At the same time shows the ability of taking a big piece of the market as investors hope.
Guild Wars 2 is week by week getting more tempting - no official publication date still announced.

Another big name in the horizon is Arenanets Guild Wars 2. The original Guild Wars has sold over six million copies, and although it is not a MMO in the traditional sense of the word, because it has enough palyers to make the sequel a very profitable product. Like its predecessor, Guild Wars 2 does not include subscription fees, which will raise many peoples interest. The game looks promising, and if Arenanets makes it top quality, success is almost assured.

Just like Everquest celebrated its 12 years, also now available MMO's are aging and expanding with new content. World of Warcraft add-ons hardly ended Cataclysm, and Blizzard is also known to be working on a completely new MMO game of this parallel. Eve Online is getting this year Incarna plug-in which players can finally come out of the spaceship and walk around the space stations. Trion will publish the new content to Rift.

Everquest and receives 18 extension.
