(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Valve has made a few changes to the way gifting works for some games, specifically the ones with VAC (Valve Anti Cheat) and Game Ban anti-cheat protection.


Previously, Steam users were able to buy unlimited copies of any one game, stack them in their inventory, and gift them later to friends or other users. This feature is the basis of many Steam communities, where participants get into the habit of buying games on sale they may not want, to later trade them for others they do want.


Going forward, as part of the new restrictions, this process won’t work with any VAC and Game Ban game, such as Counter-Strike. Now, you’re only able to buy these games for yourself, or gift them to someone immediately, no hoarding.

This was first noticed during the Steam Summer sale when users were reporting that CS:GO couldn't be gifted.

There is one MAJORLY important restriction that is quite detrimental: if you gift it to a player who receives a permanent ban, you won’t be able to gift that particular game ever again, to anyone.

Valve logic (aka their reasoning for this) is to combat cheaters in multiplayer games. Valve hopes that the new restrictions will cut down on cheaters by limiting the copies cheaters are allowed access to, in that usually 1 legit account is used to buy copies for accounts that will be used for cheating.

Keep in mind that if you buy CSGO on 1 account with a phone number and get a VAC, that phone number is then blacklisted for that game making VAC's carry over to new accounts it's tied to. The idea is that as cheaters make new accounts they tie phone numbers to them for Steam Mobile Guard.
