(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); So me and my friend were having a discusion about what the best processor for gaming is and i said it was the i5 2500k he then told me to wise up and said that the best processor out there was the i7 980x. Now personally i think the i5 is the better processor when it comes down to gaming but for overall proformance the i7 has it. Im looking for someone who knows what they are talking about to let me know what your opnion is on this.

Go for i5 2500k!

Then you have games that actually use the threads like BC2, so really it's more dependant on the game rather then some charts

Problem?
I defeated!
a Dual Core 3+ GHz would be better as a lot more games only use 2 processors.

also the video card is way more important than the processor, as any reasonable processor would be more than enought to run the latest games. (Quad and Dual Core)

Well no that's actually not true. Intel's sandybridge architecture trumps everything that's currently out there. So even if you turned off 2 cores on a quad and lowered the clock down to 3GHz to match are core 2 duo. The sandybridge would still do better.

Also the whole video card thing isn't all that true. With most games being console ports these days. Alot of them rely on a good CPU now. Yes you still need a good video card. But when you actually need a quad core processor for say BC2 and it still runs like shit, there's a problem

RIP PICHU.
Honestly price wise the I5 but I7 seems to win. Personal preference when you compare price + quality.

It really depends how much you want to spend. I myself have owned the i5 2500k before, and it is a pretty decent card. Some stats for it can be found in the below spoiler:

However, I currently own the AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition, and it works just as well, if not better for about 50$ cheaper. Spoiler with the information below:

Do take into consideration that the i5 is default on 3.3Ghz and can OC to 3.7Ghz, and the Phenom II X4 980 starts at 3.7Ghz, and I have no issues OC-ing it to 4Ghz. Really a point of preference between companies. Hope you can decide which one you would like. I also think it is unfair to classify the i7s and i5s, as the i7's are known for the 6-core ability. But you can still buy a 6-core Phenom II X6 1100T for 179$ MSRP, which is HUNDREDS of dollars cheaper. Spoiler with info for i7 990x Phenom II X6 1100T below:
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T: You must login or register to view this content. MSRP 179$
Intel i7 980x: You must login or register to view this content. MSRP 600$
Intel i7 990x: You must login or register to view this content. MSRP 1,000$

However, I currently own an AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition, which I feel does the job the same, and has fairly similar specs, but is 50$ cheaper. Spoiler with stats:

i7 2600K is better for multitasking, while it's just as good as the i5 2500k for gaming. So do as me, get an i5 2500k and overclock it. Awesome face
