I have a 5770 and i play on medium with some options set to high, 4xaa and ssao on at 45+ fps most of the time. Sometimes it drops to 40, but very rarely goes below there.
Well at the lower end, I've played BF3 on an old 4850. It really matters to what you define by "gets the job done" though. The 4850 is okay but on BF3, the frame rate drops down to 25 sometimes on medium settings.
my old 6870 crossfire is runing it for my bro with 70FPS on high settings 40FPS for non crossfire
but i reccomand you to not buy cheap things cause you might need better ones personally i have 2 6990 crossfire and despretly waiting for 7000 cause im a rig whore
you might want a 6950 that should be decent for a few years
