How to install Custom Firmware via ChickHEN on PSPs [1k-3k]

Introduction:
Hello NextGenUpdate. D-0-A / Edge here bringing you yet another guide for your personal use. Today I will be walking you step by step through the process of installing Custom Firmware via ChickHEN on your PSP. This is not restricted by PSP model. Works on them all, 1000, 1001, 2000, 2001, 3000, 3001. All motherboards as well. So without further ado lets begin shall we?

What is ChickHEN?
ChickHEN works as a homebrew enabler for all PSP models (1000, 2000 and 3000) and allows execution of homebrew games and apps on 5.03 Official firmware.
What you need:



  1. A PSP......(DUH!)

    • PSP Needs to be on firmware 5.03.


  2. Firmware 5.03 - Download: You must login or register to view this content.
  3. ChickHEN R2 - Download: You must login or register to view this content.
  4. Custom Firmware 5.03 GEN-A - Download: You must login or register to view this content.
  5. Custom Firmware 5.03 GEN-B - Download: You must login or register to view this content.
  6. CFW 360 MHU - Download: You must login or register to view this content.
  7. Sedna for CFW 5.03 GEN-A/B - Download: You must login or register to view this content.
  8. Patience and just a little bit of time


Installing Firmware 5.03:
    [COLOR=Red][B]If you already have Official Firmware 5.03 you can skip this step.[/B][/COLOR]
This is a really simple process, that is completely painless.


  1. Download Firmware 5.03. (See above)
  2. Connect your PSP to your PC via USB cable.
  3. Navigate to [Settings] > USB Mode.
  4. Open the folder named PSP.
  5. Open the folder named GAME.
  6. Make a new folder and name it UPDATE in all capitals.
  7. Place the 5.03 EBOOT in the UPDATE Folder.
  8. Exit USB Mode.
  9. Navigate to Game in the XMB.
  10. Hit X on Memory Stick under Game.
  11. Press X on PSP Update.
  12. Follow the onscreen instructions.


Booting to ChickHEN R2:
    [B][COLOR=Red]For PSPs 2K/3K this modded version of ChickHEN is recommended to be used. This is guaranteed to work on the first try. You are welcome to use the other version, however, this version for PSP Models 2k/3k would be a better choice. For PSP Models 1K use the version uploaded above. [/COLOR][/B]

Time now to boot your PSP into ChickHEN mode. Note: Your PSP WILL revert BACK to it's original modified state IF you turn your PSP FULLY OFF! So have your charger handy, a full battery, and if you need to walk away, suspend your PSP, just do NOT turn it FULLY off!


  1. Download ChickHEN. (See Above.)
  2. Open the ChickHEN Folder.

    • PHAT is for 1K models.
    • Slim is for 2K/3K models.

      • For PSP Models 2K/3K see the above note for this section before going further.




  3. On your PSP navigate to [Settings].
  4. Go into USB Mode.
  5. Place the folders into your PICTURES folder at the ROOT of your memory stick.

    • For Phat PSP Users:



    1. Open the Phat folder within the ChickHEN Folder.
    2. Place the image in your PICTURES folder.

      • File structure should be as follows:

        • ms0:/PICTURES/.gif image here







    • For Slim PSP Users:



    1. Open the Slim Folder within the ChickHEN Folder.
    2. Place the ChickHEN Folder in your PICTURES Folder.

      • File structure should be as follows:

        • ms0:/PICTURES/ChickHEN/.gif image here






  6. Now place the h.bin file in the ROOT of your memory stick.

    • File structure should be as follows:

      • ms0:/h.bin




  7. Exit USB Mode.
  8. Stay in [Settings] in your XMB.
  9. Scroll down to [System Settings].
  10. Turn OFF UMD Auto-Start.
  11. Turn OFF UMD Cache.
  12. Navigate to [Photos] in the XMB.
  13. Enable ChickHEN.

    • For Slim Users Open the ChickHEN Folder under [Photos] and view the image.
    • For Phat users view the image.


  14. You will see 5 Egg Images.

    • These will start to load thumbnails.
    • Your PSP MAY freeze and restart.
    • If it does this, keep trying to load ChickHEN.
    • If you see flashing colors, your PSP will reboot loading the ChickHEN.



At this point you have a Homebrew enabled PSP. Congrats. You can only play homebrew games. To go further and do more with your PSP, continue to read on.
How to install 5.03 GEN-A (HEN MOD):
Now it's time to install 5.03 GEN-A on to your ChickHEN PSP. BEFORE we continue there is something you MUST know. This is NOT the same 5.03 GEN-A that was released for fully hacked PSPs. This version is a specially modded version made especially for ChickHEN PSPs.


  1. Download the special 5.03 GEN-A. (See above.)
  2. Navigate to [Settings] in your XMB.
  3. Go into USB Mode.
  4. Open the 5.03 GEN-A folder.

    • NOTE: You MUST have ChickHEN enable to continue further.
    • NOTE: YOU MUST have at LEAST You must login or register to view this content. or higher to continue.


  5. Run the LAUNCH-ME.exe in the 5.03 GEN-A folder.
  6. Chose the options.

    • PSP 2000
    • PSP 3000


  7. Chose mode FULL
  8. Chose what drive your PSP is set to.

    • Example: F, G, H, I, etc.


  9. Click Start.

    • The files are now being copied to your PSP.


  10. Disconnect your PSP from USB Mode.
  11. Navigate to [Game] in your XMB.
  12. Scroll down to Memory stick under [Game].
  13. Launch the main EBOOT.PBP.
  14. When the application comes up, press L or R to flash the firmware in your flash.

    • You ONLY need to make it one time!
    • DO NOT DO THIS MULTIPLE TIMES!
    • YOU WILL BRICK!


  15. Press O to reboot the Custom Firmware.



Installing 5.03 GEN-B (HEN MOD):
    [COLOR=Red][B]YOU MUST HAVE 5.03 GEN-A (HEN MOD) TO CONTINUE FROM HERE. IF NOT, SEE ABOVE STEPS.[/B][/COLOR]
Isn't much to say on this. ALMOST the same as above, just your updating to a better version of 5.03 GEN. So lets begin shall we.


  1. Download the 5.03 GEN-B (HEN MOD). (See Above.)
  2. Navigate to [Settings] in your XMB.
  3. Enter USB Mode.
  4. Open the 5.03 GEN-B (HEN MOD) folder.

    • Open the PSP Folder.
    • Open the GAME Folder.


  5. Take the 5.03 GEN-B Folder and place it in your GAME folder of your PSP.

    • File structure should be as follows:

      • ms0:/PSP/GAME/5.03 GEN-B




  6. Exit USB mode.
  7. Navigate to [Game] in your XMB.
  8. Scroll down to [Memory Stick].
  9. Launch the Game Updater.
  10. Let the process run.
  11. Pres X to finish the process.
  12. The PSP will reboot.
  13. You are done.


How to make 5.03 GEN-A/B permanent:
Right now, the CFW you have installed is temporary, and MUST be made permanent. Here is how to do so. Lets begin.


  1. Download Sedna for 5.03 GEN-A/B. (See above.)
  2. Extract the files.
  3. Navigate to [Settings] in your XMB.
  4. Go into USB mode.
  5. Place the seplugins folder in the ROOT of your memory stick.

    • File structure should be as follows:
    • ms0:/seplugins


  6. Open the seplugins folder in the ROOT of your memory stick.
  7. Open the VSH.txt.

    • Note pad file.


  8. Open the Game.txt.

    • Note pad file.


  9. Copy the following line into both of those documents.

    • ms0:/seplugins/Sedna.prx 1




That is it. This is an independent thing. Doesn't need anything else to run. Does it all on it's own. See wasn't that painless?
Installing CFE 360 MHU (A.K.A. 5.00 M33-6):
This is an custom firmware enabler. What this does is enabled select features to your newly ChickHEN CFW'ed PSP. Everything but POPs and Recovery Console is unlocked and enabled....yes ISO/CSO support is included. So lets begin.


  1. Download CFE 360 MHU. (See Above.)
  2. Navigate to [Settings] in your XMB.
  3. Go into USB Mode.
  4. Take the CFWEnabler folder and place it into your GAME folder.

    • File structure should be as follows:

      • ms0:/PSP/GAME/CFWEnabler




  5. Exit USB Mode.
  6. Navigate to [Game] in your XMB.
  7. Scroll down to [Memory Stick].
  8. Run the updater.
  9. Select the First Option.
  10. Accept.

Once you install this, do NOT install it again! If your PSP crashes or shuts down due to any reason, just launch the updater and don't press anything. It will automatically reboot your PSP to CFE.

Closing Remarks:
Okay. That's it. You should be good to go. Just a few things we need to cover before you leave this thread or reply.
This guide is MORE so for PSP Models 2K/3K with unhackable motherboards!
IF your PSP is a Phat model, PLEASE GO find a Pandora battery! DO NOT try to follow this guide!
These kinds of CFW are not permanent (unless you have GEN-A/B Sedna patched). If you shutdown the psp, the psp will not load the custom firmware again. You need to reload ChickHen R2, then launch EBOOT.PBP of GEN-A and press o when you enter the menu.
When you have installed the custom firmware in your flash, you can remove the "files" folder in the MS ROOT.For your own safety, it is better to rename or erase the prx called "flasher.prx" in the MAIN APP folder to avoid wrong flashing times.
Don't ever flash an irrelevant firmware to your psp-2000,3000 (flash0) (unhackable motherboards). This means, once you have 5.03 GEN-A/B do NOT try to go to another CFW! STAY WHERE YOU ARE! This will result in a permanent brick that can't be fixed until a new exploit is found.

This is for PSP's that have "Un-hackable" mother boards. If you have updated past 5.03 then this will not work for you. You have to wait until the 6.20 exploit is developed further. So stop updating.

i dont even use my psp 1000 that much anymore. i download gotube and youtube on it and watch sum little porn Upside Down Happy thats the only reason why i havent sold it yet

I use my 1000 for that, my 2000 for playing games and homebrew, and my 3000 for Skype and movies.

Well regardless, I wanted to post this up, because I did a quick SEARCH and saw that we didn't have one, so I thought this would be a nice addition to the site.

Know what, just close and delete this. I know this wasn't a rip, I even have the Private Messages on the QJ.Net forums where I TALKED with Elite999, and got permission to make this. I this posted on another website as well. Not one word was said. Here it is "It's a rip from here, and your a noob, you didn't even credit them.".

First off, I have never seen that site in my life. They credited Elite. Good for them. They also COPY AND PASTED WORD FOR WORD!

You call rip because the "dots" are out of place, well for one, I didn't see "dots" in that fail link. I do however see dots from where I posted this else where where it uses BBCODE! So simple, standard Wysigg Editor to get the BBCode, then it was a simple transfer.

You call bs, because the rep and thanks button are "not from here", well check out the Rouge Style. Then tell me they are not from here.

So this is my input on it. I honestly don't care. If you think this is a rip, and chose not to believe me then delete it. All I can say, is this is a down right shame. Also this is a lesson learned. Don't post stuff here, that you don't want to be claimed as a rip; because if a member of staff or a Premium member says its a rip, everyone believes it.
