All depends on your needs... For cfw it is worth it a little but heavier and thick than newer models but still gets the job done.
I own a psp2001 and a pspGo and a psVita and all are the same with the exeption of the vita new features.
But buy what u can afford of the psp series u wont c much of a differnce(psp3001) has a built in mic :/

I've been using a 1001 model for about 6 years; they aren't the most attractive, but they are capable of nearly everything the newer models can possibly do. I will admit though, if you're not using CFW on the device, you're seriously depriving yourself of the device's true potential. I use mine daily, and the large and brilliant library of PSP titles available makes the Vita hardly anything to shift a brow upon. If you're bored, I suggest you look into the games the device has to offer. I can even help you if you state your gaming preferences.

I use a 8 Gigabyte Memory Stick Pro Duo. Not Sony's official product; Sandisk's.

Save Point
They are not a 'waste of money' it's just that you can jailbreak the psp 1000 and with the 3000 you can't.

Aspire.
The future is in your hands
They are not a waste of money because if you hack the handheld and install a custom firmware then you can easily enjoy all the free games all at your fingertips provided that you have a memory stick with enough storage.
