I'm sorry but that is how it is. However, your friends can tell if you are online or not by going to the very bottom of their friend's list. If you are online, it will show your gamertag as if you were offline but it doesn't state how many minutes, hours, etc. you were last on. It just shows your gamertag and nothing underneath. I don't think there is any sort of fix for this. You and your friends are just going to have to deal with it, just like everybody. It's all Sony's fault, lol.
