A redesigned PlayStation Vita has been announced for a 10th October release in Japan.
The new model is 20 per cent thinner than the existing model and 15 per cent lighter, coming in at 15mm in width and 219g in weight.
The new Vita comes with 1GB of onboard storage.
The redesign features an improved battery that provides up to six hours of gameplay time and is available in yellow, pink, white, gray, lime green and light blue.
Meanwhile, the original PS Vita's sexy OLED display has been replaced by a five inch, 16:9, 960 x 544 LCD screen capable of displaying approximately 16 million colors.
Sony explained the switch away from OLED by saying, "Thanks to the rapid progress of LCD technology in recent years, the new display provides users with the highest-level image quality, perfect for deep and immersive gaming experience that is at the core of PS Vita."
Sony believes that the new model Vita will be "more casual and friendly for a wider range of users."
As yet there has been no mention as to whether the redesigned Vita will launch outside of Japan.
I agree 3G was a waste of money, and at the time 4G was right around the corner. There's plenty of hotspots if you know where to look. Also, the mystery port has already been revealed. Here's the source You must login or register to view this content.
To get 4G would have cost more in the overall price, they were trying to keep the price down so it wouldn't be overpriced at launch like the PSP was.

Highest level image quality my ass. The real reason they chose LCD is because 1. It's cheaper 2. it allowed them the slimmer design. If anything they should have upgraded the ram, gave us more internal memory, and cut the proprietary memory cards that aren't selling. This is what's hurting unit sales the damn memory cards are over priced. For the price we pay they should be at least class 10. I'll stick with the beautiful OLED instead of the 2000 series LCD screen with inferior picture quality. It's good for people looking for a cheaper more affordable handheld, but by no means should this be considered a upgrade more like a downgrade with cheaper parts.
Yes it's cheaper but they are going to sell at a lower price to get more units sold. To add more memory and such it would be overpriced, look at the PSPGO, no memory cards needed but thanks to the 16GBs of flash memory it was way overpriced seeing how normal PSPs that needed memory cards was at least $150 to $200 cheaper. To get more memory and updated RAM means it's going to cost more and with a higher price means less are going to get sold. I'll look into this new model as I play my launch day Vita.

They shouldn't make statements that it's better. I consider that false advertisement. The PSPGO was an epic failure to say the least. It was one of Sony's failed attempts to push their consumers into the disadvantaged digital market, and obviously they wanted to cut used game sales which didn't work out for them and never will. If anything piracy pushed unit sales for the UMD models. I would have been happy to pay the original launch price for the Vita again if they actually took the time to improve upon it instead of degrading it. They should take notes from Apple instead of moving backwards they should be moving forward. They need to get their first party studios to make some AAA games that's what pushes unit sales. They can price drop the Vita to $100 dollars. No one's going to buy it if it doesn't have games to show for it. Look at the Ouya for example.
