(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Lots of people in the technological industry are starting to think that Microsoft are beginning to dominate the large market area that is gaming. Personally, from my Xbox fanboy positition, it actually mentally hurts me when I admit that I think these opinions are entirely wrong. Unfortunately, I think Microsoft has had its day. They were unique, revolutionary even, just 15 years ago. Nowadays however, there are many competitors in the market fighting to be given the consumer title of most in demand gaming company of the present day. Who do you think will or should win? Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft? Vocalise your opinion in the form of a comment. As always, I would love to hear your opinions.[coverattach=1]

The Microsoft Entertainment and Devices Division was able to start the year by telling the world that they are three times more profitable than they were a year ago. Q4 ‘09 profits from the division were $375 million, compared with $130 million for Q4 ‘08. The increase comes from Moore’s law bringing down hardware manufacturing costs and from the ever increasing user base buying proportionately more software and Live services, which are a lot more profitable than hardware.

The Xbox 360 also currently heads the game sales chart with Mass Effect 2 and are by far the most popular platform for the monster hit that is Modern Warfare 2. This presages a year in which there will be a succession of huge titles that are not available on the other consoles. Halo: Reach, Fable III, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction, Alan Wake, Crackdown 2 and Scrap Metal for starters. For any game enthusiast these make owning a 360 essential, even if it is in addition to owning other consoles.

On the hardware side Microsoft are starting to roll out 250GB hard drives. And this autumn we have the much anticipated release of Project Natal. Microsoft have changed the design slightly to reduce the hardware by doing more in software (using 10-15% of the 360s cpu resources), this is to keep to the $50 price target and to increase the flexibility of the device. At this price Microsoft expect to sell several million units in the ‘10 holiday season and so there is impressive game support coming from publishers. Pretty soon around half of all 360 owners will probably buy Natal and they will want Natal enabled games to play on it. Expect a surge in more family friendly titles, which will take the 360 to new demographics, further enhancing its success.

All is not sweetness and light at the Microsoft Entertainment and Devices Division, though. Their mobile strategy has been an unmitigated disaster with Google and Apple trampling all over them. This is the biggest possible problem for Microsoft as mobile devices are set to dominate computing and the internet. Even if they continue to dominate the office and grow to dominate the living room they could still be beaten by the owners of the mobile space.

Finally let’s risk making a prediction for the next generation of Microsoft home console, the Xbox 720, Xbox 3 or Xbox Phoenix. It is inevitable that Microsoft must do this because Moores law will leave the Xbox 360 looking less and less powerful. They will produce a scaled Xbox 360, so it will be backwards compatible. The new machine will have many more features and benefits such as 3D. It will be announced, probably at E3, in Q2 ‘11 and will be available at retail Q4 ‘11. Expect it to be 8 times the power of an Xbox 360 (Moores law says it will be) and expect the 360 to stay in production as the junior model in a two model range, retailing for $100.

I have customised a statistical graph for you, with very accurate plotted data that I got from each companies claimed statistics. I don't know about you, but I was very surprised about the results. Nintendo are demolishing both Sony and Microsoft in volume of sales, and it seems like both, the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 are neck and neck in sales. The graph took me a while, so you'd better appreciate it! :p
The units along the bottom are weeks. There are 52 weeks that I plotted there. The units on the far left are the number of units sold.
I left the enlarge banner ON, because I realise that somem people may not be able to see it in its present size. Check it out, it's pretty interesting! Winky Winky

RED LINE = PLAYSTATION 3
BLUE LINE = NINTENDO WII
GREEN LINE = XBOX 360

Wii is a more family-friendly oriented gaming console.
PS3 is if you want the best looking games or movies.
Xbox360 is for the mentally ill gamer. Or people who like an overly exploited/hacked console, *and the person for the -rep*. TBH I'd rather buy a PC over and xbox any day.

Funny how xbox needs another console for 3D availability. The PS3 will be getting a firmware upgrade for it sometime later this year(read an article somewhere), but might be rumors.

Ignore the fact that I have a PS3.. Really i'm fair in judging them. The PS3 is clearly more powerful, has a lot more potential and is newer <crucial However, Microsoft has backed up the xbox to a point where it can no longer stand. It's going down fast and i'm sure it annoys developers with the limit to the development power. It has exclusive games, costs the same and has a better online that requires PAYMENT <I would hate As for the nintendo wii it technically leads the generation LMAO. It's half the price and enjoyed by a greater range of people. The xBox was better than the playstation before as long as it didn't fail and you were willing to pay the price for an Elite and online. However, it is slowly dying and I have a feeling Natal isn't going to fix this.

Its not rumours that ps3 will be getting 3d its already been confirmed by sony themselves. At CES they had games running in 3d GT5, uncharted 2 and more its no rumour

Good, I just mentioned rumor because I've only heard about it and haven't actually seen the demo.

Maggbot timeout!
well I own all 3, a wii, 360 and ps3. So my judgment is fair.

PS3 wins by far hands down. Anyone who says a 360 is better is full of shit and or has never really seen what a PS3 can do.
