The You must login or register to view this content. writes that on April 1st, 2010, the Sony Playstation 3 console will receive a system update which will discontinue the use of other OS's on the PS3 console. Now, this won't affect the PS3 Slim, so they can choose not to update.
This is an optional update however, Sony has stated that several features will not be accessible without the update (which almost makes it mandatory to enjoy the PS3)
These include:
-Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
-Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
-Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
-Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
So even though Sony claims this to be an "optional" update, more than likely you will want to sign into the PSN, or use any of the features listed above, and will update anyways.
The reason for "disabling the 'Other OS' feature" is that Sony "wants to help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system."
It doesn't make any sense because I know for a fact that the USAF uses the PS3 EXACTLY for the reason it can operate on another OS. PS3s are cheaper than the average computer so it would make sense to buy a PS3 rather than a PC. But hey, maybe that's why we're not at SCE.
If you have NOT updated your PS3 already, follow this tutorial on how to bypass.

this sucks for those that have another OS on their PS3. I have a slim so it really doesn't effect me too much. I bet their doing this before a public "hack" comes out similar to j-tag xbox. that's my guess & 2 cents anyway
Wasn't this denied and proven false by sony like a few weeks ago? I remember a qj.net post saying where Sony didn't have plans to remove the other os.
this is straight from sony. so whatever qj said a few weeks ago is invalid. Please follow the two links in the news post to see the full story DIRECTLY from Sony

I love it when people put the source link in their post. Thanks for that. It annoys me to no end when I see random posts claiming something without a source.
