E3 is finished, wacky motion controllers and all, but the summer is just starting. In a few months, the holiday season will begin--and with it, companies will release an avalanche of games. While E3 presents a heck of a lot of glitz, promises, and hype, a handful of games always manage to emerge that excite us and give us hope for the gaming year ahead.


Could we have done with a lot fewer sequels? Most definitely. Do we wish Microsoft and Sony hadn't spent so much time hawking motion technology at the show? Undoubtedly. But we still found ourselves with a long list of games we want to play. Some games' release dates are around the corner (Mafia II), while others don't have a date yet.

The following titles are a sample of the best to expect over the coming months of 2010 and the opening months of 2011:

Title:Crysis 2

Crysis is finally making its way to consoles, but the NYC-set sequel will look its best on PCs. The ultra-detailed destruction effects and city maps should serve as a new PC graphics pinnacle.

Title:Kirby's Epic Yarn

Put aside those gripes about Nintendo ignoring its older franchises and retro gameplay--this gorgeous-looking 2D Kirby platformer is full of clever graphics effects and, hopefully, inventive level designs.

Title:Call of Duty: Black Ops

It's not a Modern Warfare sequel, but developer Treyarch is serving up a Cold War buffet of intense political shooter gameplay that, so far, looks quite impressive.

Title:Dance Central

Microsoft's Kinect will need some help to convince gamers that its controller-free setup can do more than make people look foolish. Harmonix's pop-club dance title could be the cool kid among the Kinect launch games this November.

Title:Disney Epic Mickey

One of the most unique games seen at E3 this year was a dark adventure-action game featuring Mickey Mouse, made by the same person who created Deus Ex. Don't expect a standard platformer, but there are still great levels based on classic Disney history and animation, like the Steamboat Willie interlude to the left.

Title:Fallout: New Vegas

Title:Ghost Recon Future Soldier

Title:Halo: Reach

The excitement preceding the release of new Halo games may have been dampened by last year's smaller-scale Halo: ODST, but Reach is the fourth and final Halo game, according to Bungie. Although it's technically a prequel to the original Halo, its epic scale and space dogfighting segments should restore some of Halo's glory.

It isn't Grand Theft Auto, but 2K's 1950s-themed mafia epic could be the immersive, cinematic surprise hit of the summer. At the least, it should provide what we expected from those Godfather games in the first place.

Title:Bulletstorm

Very little is known about this Metal Gear sequel, other than it features Raiden as opposed to Snake. Swordplay is the main focus, including ridiculous slicing and dicing of enemies, trucks, and fruit.

There a few cool games coming out this year but i'm looking forward to Fallout: New Vegas the most.
