With this rollout of PSN+ I thought it was a good idea to set a benchmark of data to compare to over the coming months.
As we all know the Playstation has been a lagging console in the nextgen series.. The XBOX 360 was released a year earlier and has captured more of a market share of the gaming consumers.
Let's boil down some numbers here and see what Playstation and those guys at Sony are doing.
The fiscal year of 2010 ended March 2010. During Sony's fiscal year (2010) 21% of their total revenue comes from a category of "Networked Products & Services." This includes the gaming consoles, games, and PC networked (computers) devices. Of that 21% of revenue, 56% of that is attributed to gaming. That represents almost 12% of Sony's total revenue. Hopefully you're following so far.
Interestingly enough, Sony's other revenue sources are from televisions, digital imaging (cameras), audio/video and semi-conductors. These categories represent 40% of Sony's total revenue.
What I find sort of shocking is that Sony's music division only accounts for 7% of total revenue. Their movie division is 9.8% of their total revenue. I didn't bother to put figures in here because Sony being a Japanese country quotes their revenue in Yen. I don't feel like doing the conversion on the total 7.2 billion yen to figure out how much that is in each of our respective currencies.
To the PS3:
In 2008 (fiscal year), the PS3 sold 9.1 million units. In 2009 they sold 10.1 million units which is an 11% increase. From 2009 to 2010 they a nice big jump to selling 13 million units or an increase of 30%.
PS3 software has generated some equally impressive numbers. 2008 software sold 57.9 million units. In 2009 Sony sold 103.7 million units, an amazing 87% increase. In 2010 the software sales jumped to 115.6 million units or 11.7% growth.
PS3 has sold a total of 35.7 million units since it's launch in 2006. It will be interesting to see how PSN+ develops over the next coming months and how that impacts revenue on the company's business unit.
Ironically with these growth figures, Sony lost 6.7% of total revenue last year.
