When the mass exodus of talent leaving Infinity Ward occurred earlier this year it begat rumblings that the decimated development studio may be pulled off the Call of Duty franchise. While the whispers were at that time treated as overreactions, it seems that now things are looking bleak, as Activision is considering "refocusing" the studio on other projects.

When asked if Infinity Ward would continue to be a Call of Duty studio, Activision EVP of of studios David Stohl said, "We're not saying right now. There is definitely a strong shooter philosophy there, for sure. And I think that there's a short- and long-term view on the whole thing. But I think we're rebuilding a studio that can go off and build great new franchises in the future."

Sounds like a very vague way of saying that Treyarch will continue its role as a Call of Duty studio while Infinity Ward may be quietly put on other projects. If that's indeed the case, then oh how the mighty have fallen.

"If you strike us down, we shall arise and destroy you all".

Even though Infinity Ward's last game, Modern Warfare 2, was one of the most successful titles ever, the studio was absolutely gutted as dozens of senior staffers left to join ousted former bosses Jason West and Vince Zampella at the newly-formed Respawn Studios. Industry watchers have been wondering if Infinity Ward can even survive this whole ordeal, or if the studio would simply be folded in with Treyarch or Bungie and quietly killed off. Seems that IW will live on, but now Activision will be doing their best to distance the studio from its former flagship franchise, instead pushing them to work on a different IP.

At this point we're left to wonder what might have been had Activision not canned West and Zampella in what quickly turned into a rather public and particularly ugly firing. Had the whole thing been handled with a bit more tact then maybe Infinity Ward would have remained mostly undisturbed and right now we'd be getting our first taste of what was in store for Modern Warfare 3. Alas, hindsight is 20/20 and now both sides are left figuring out what to do given the way things are, not the way things might have been. It's just sad to see an entire studio continue to get caught up in the middle of a disagreement that spiraled out of control and now threatens to humble what was once one of gaming's most-revered development houses.

Well, it seems as though after black ops, the Call of Duty empire has fallen. Modern Warfare was its pinnacle, and now it is just downhill from there.

Well you have kinda changed by mind on the leaving game part O well, its part of the game. I known how you feel about MW2 Teerar, lol. You of all people would quote me on this Smile But i am just trying to back up infinity ward on the good things and not hate them because of 3 or 4 bad things thats all..

But when those 3 or 4 things are gamebreaking, then its an issue.
IW did a great job with COD 2 and 4, MW2 would have been just as good if they removed the stuff that was getting abused, though.
