A week ago, I posted a thread containing my favorite video game characters. Unfortunately, the community absolutely stomped me with their picks. I had forgotten
way too many badasses, and now I plan on amending that mistake. So, with that, I present to you NextGenUpdate’s opinions on the coolest, most badass and awesome characters to ever grace us with the ability to control them.
Our community’s tenth favorite character is Tommy Vercetti. Tommy is the main character in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Prior to his introduction in Vice City, Tommy’s history took him to a 15 year prison sentence for 11 counts of homicide. Whether or not that prison sentence is realistic or not

, Tommy surely has earned his nickname, the “Harwood Butcher.”
Following Tommy, in ninth place, you chose Leon S. Kennedy, one of the main characters of the Resident Evil series. Leon is a graduate from the police academy and has recently been selected for Raccoon Police’s special Select Police Force. Throughout the game, Leon and his accomplices bash some serious zombie ass, which is certainly more than enough to put him in our top ten.

In eighth place, we have a character only loveable to those of us with a Playstation 3. He is brutally fearsome (in fact, the game designer even admitted to going for that look…). In the game, Kratos is displayed as an
anti-hero, despite how awesome he truly is. Although he has a sincerely ruthless side, he also is incredibly sad and softened by his daughter Calliope’s death. Either way, Kratos smashes his way through God of War, claiming himself superior to many other weaker characters. For that, Kratos, we salute you. Please don’t kill us.

With seventh place, we take a stroll down memory lane. Crash Bandicoot, arguably one of the most awesome characters to ever grace gaming with his presence, is definitely one of the characters who deserves a place here. In his journeys, Bandicoot destroys many a crate, collects many a wumpa, and ultimately hands Cortex’s ass to him on a silver platter by the end of the game. Crash is included in
16 games, which is surely a mark of an epic character. Plus, he poses like a pro.

When I saw our sixth place pick, I was shocked. I don’t understand how this character isn’t higher up, because he and his dragonfly accomplice are
definitely childhood classics. Spyro, the adored purple dragon, has led me and many others on countless adventures throughout his time as a character. Whether he’s blowing fire in your face or collecting gems and eggs or unfreezing dragons, he’s surely one of the greatest characters ever. Sparx, the dragonfly, was pretty epic too. Besides, who else could have a picture this awesome?

Coming in dead center, our community chose an easily recognizable character in the world of gaming. You may or may not remember, but, in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, this character successfully aided in the completion of the game by sliding a pistol to you in the level Game Over. You know who I’m talking about now. Our number five pick was Captain Price of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Surprisingly enough, Game Informer ranked Price as their #5 as well. Pretty cool, huh? NGU obviously knows what’s up.
In fourth place, Duke Nukem makes his appearance. Duke is arguably the most badass of all badasses. In his time as a character, he’s pulled off some amazing feats. Unfortunately, Duke Nukem Forever, the next installment in Duke Nukem’s series has been in development for roughly 12 years. The direction of its development has been in the hands of many different companies, each failing to finally complete the game. Either way, Duke Nukem is here to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and yes, he’s all out of gum.
The numbers are thinning now, and finally we are at third place. NGU believes that CJ, the main character of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, is its rightful owner. Personally, I loved San Andreas. Although I never completely beat the story, being sidetracked by running over pedestrians or landing my airplane on them never got old. CJ’s “colorful” dialogue surely makes up part of his prestige, and I am very happy to say that he is most definitely the Prince of Liberty City.
In second, the number of votes definitely raises. CJ left us off with 4 votes, now, our runner-up sets the bar with 7. Our second place winner is Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series. Snake is a spy, a mercenary, and a special operations agent. Throughout the games, he is tasked with disarming Metal Gear, a nuclear weapon-armed mecha. Exclusive to the Playstation 3, this world-saving hero is definitely one of our favorites. Keep on truckin’, Snake.
Now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for! The final contestant, the crème de la crème, the best of the best, a hero of heroes! Drum roll… please?
And the winner is
John Marston, that amazing cowboy with an unforgettable name in Red Dead Redemption. John Marston is the main character in the game, which is an old Wild West version of its sister games, the Grand Theft Auto series, which is also developed by Rockstar Games. This cowboy is plagued by his hunt for one of his old gang members, who he has planned to either capture or kill. I won’t spoil the story, though, but John Marston’s unique characteristics definitely make him a winner. Congratulations, John!
